How does a scope get fitted to a 27-2?

Do people do it?

What type of accuracy could I get from a 2X EER scope on a 27-2 with a 3.5 inch barrel at 50 & 100 yards?

Also, is the front lense being so close to the muzzle going to ruin it in short order?

I do not plan on doing this but was curious if anyone had.

This is a dot on my 25-2. It replaces the rear site assembly and makes it a real killer on bowling pins.

I had a cheap 2x dot from Tru-glo that went with a gun I didn't like, S&W 22A. I think the dot is great, a 2X scope…. I don noo.

it could be done, may have been done, but in the case of a 3.5" pipe doing so I thing would detract from its utilitarian function.
if the specimen were in a 6" or greater length, then it starts fitting the description of a hunting pistol where the optics start to make sense.
but then< Ive seen a scoped Glock 17 ..... didnt understand it but the owner seemed to like it for a while.

There's nothing more unusual about a scoped Glock 17 than a scoped M1911. A friend used to shoot his Glock 17 in the centerfire stage of bullseye matches. He had a Tasco Pro-Point or Ultra-Dot on it. He did reasonably well too.

Scoped S&W 500

I've got a S&W 500 with a 6.5" barrel. I'm going to put my Aimpoint CompM4 on it. Should be plenty good out to 100 yards.

Ages ago, I put a 2x scope on my brand new 28-2 with a 6in barrel. Had to have it drilled and tapped and rear site removed. It shot as good as my 30-30 TC Super 14. Coke cans at 100 yds were short lived. Then I did a stupid thing, I sold it. But I have learned from my mistakes. I now just move them to the bottom shelf of the safe and consider them an investment.

Scoping a revolver

I'm going to have to reverse course and change my opinion regarding putting a scope on a S&W Revolver; especially the Model 29s and 629s that have barrels between 4" and 8". I think a scope on a revolver with a barrel length less than 4" is just problematic. You couldn't get the scope objective bell far enough away from the muzzle blast to avoid damaging it. I suppose you could mount a smaller red dot like the Docter red dot, or the Aimpoint Micro red dot, but…it would still look…odd. I believe mounting a scope or a red dot on a classic S&W revolver with a 4" to 8" barrel really ruins the lines of the revolver. My own S&W 500 has a 6.5" barrel, and I think it would just l would feel better about hunting open sights with a revolver of that barrel length.

Think of it this way. A lot of us including me aren't getting any younger. And a lot of us have cataracts, so having a scope mounted seems to me a very good thing. Been giving thought to doing just that on a model 10 HB that I own. Frank

scope mount on a S&W revolver-a 629-6 PC

I have a 1 1/2 eer Nikon on this one, and I can shoot it with confidence a 100 yds. A great combo, I have found. Flapjack

I scoped two of my 28's, the 4" was a beater I picked up cheap and found a Buehler no-drill mount and put a Leupold 2x from the early 80's on it. I use it as a .38 plinker, maybe some day might try some .357's through it.

The 6" was one I bought at a gun shop, and discovered there were drill and tap holes under the rear sight.......so with the help of a fellow forum member I mounted a Buehler mount with a vintage 1.5x Redfield.

Actually,it has been shown that shorter barrels are more mechanically accurate than longer barrels, but with less velocity........but not enough of a gain or loss for most of us to really notice:)

My 4" 28-2 with the scope is extremely accurate at 50 yards and beyond, and it makes a handy package with the shorter barrel.

You will have to have the top strap drilled for the scope mount - I would advise against doing that. I have a 27-2 with 8 3/8" bbl which I purchased as a shooter since it had been previously drilled for a scope mount. The 3.5 inch barrel will throw a lot of debris on the front lens and in time may make it unusable.

Here is a NIkon Monarch 2x20 EER on my 620. BTW, actual magnification is only 1.75 X and that's been corrected with the newer Encore 2x20 EER that replaced the Monarch.

Personally, because you have a 3 1/2 inch 27-2, one of my Grail Guns not yet realized, I would hate to see you drill and tap that particular gun for a scope. However, it is your gun so do as you like with it, the additional tapped holes wont do any functional harm to the gun. However the checkering on the top strap of the frame will probably dig into a mounting rail and leave traces of aluminum in the checkering after removing the rail.

As for accuracy that can be expected at long range, most of us are NOT quite as steady as we think we are. Quite simply, 50 yards is a very long poke for a handgun and it's difficult to shoot really great groupings that far out. I've shot that 620 a enough to get a grasp of it's potential accuracy and also realize I'll never measure up to it. Flyers are a constant companion but so are occasional brief flashes of brilliance that result in cloverleafs. As noted previously, shorter barrels are usually cpable of better mechanical accuracy than longer barrels because they don't deflect as much. I think that it would be reasonable to expect accuracy of about 1 inch at 50 yards with your model 27 and it may even shoot tighter with some load developement. I'll also warn you that 2X magnification isn't that much and you may find yourself wanting more magnification at 100 yards.

I'm 70, and I use red dots on my bullseye guns, as my eye's aren't what they used to be. I have put them on a mod 17, 6" and did shoot it much better, but I hate the looks of a scope on a S&W. To take full advantage of scoping a revolver, use at least a 6" gun if not a 8 3/8" gun. Your shooting will stretch out to 100 yards routinely. If you are interested in closer range shooting, 25-50 yards, I would recommend a red dot, and if you are more interested in 50-100 yard shooting I would recommend a 2X - 4X scope. I put a 2 to 7X variable on a 10" barreled TC in .222 caliber, and use it on Prairie Dogs out to about 200 yards. The TC lends itself to being scoped very well.
Here's what the 17-4 looked like with a red dot.
