The 46th N frame ever made NIB
Hello, stumbled across a new in box s&w model 28-2 this weekend at the collectors show, an old man had it, serial number N46 on the frame, N46 on the hilt, pristine original finish, blue 2 piece box with solid boarder with old vintage label turned yellow and pen almost faded but matching to the gun, the other box end is embroidered with highway patrol man 6" blue etc... ive done some homework and this particular label, was from 1969 or earlier due to the " & " Marking and the style, slightly different than the 1970 labels with the "&" making a full connection where the 1969 and prior labels didn't, my question is this, I thought that the first N frame was 1970? would this indeed be the 46th n frame ever made?

The first N frame was made in 1908 and was called the "New Century". The N you are referring to is part of the serial number. The original N frames had no letter in the serial. Later N frame guns has the S prefix serial number beginning after WWII until about 1969 whe the company switched to the N prefix due to requirement of the 1968 Gun Control Act. Still your N46 is a neat serail to have. Congrats.

The OP did not indicate his gun was the first N frame ever made.
Go back and read the post and stop jumping on people . Its getting really old and quite boring. Best to all.

The title said otherwise, Mike... "The 46th N Frame ever made". And, I don't think I was jumping on him...

I thought quinn's answer was fine as well. I know of at least one forum member who used to think the "S" prefix referred to the "S" frame.

Yes, that was exactly what OP asked! You are the one who needs to go back and read his post. He said it not only once, but twice, very clearly. And speak about "Jumping on someone", what do you think it was that you did to The Gun Vault????

When the change was made from S prefix serial numbers to N prefix serial numbers, the first guns to be made with the N prefix were 28-2s. N1 was auctioned recently and has been for sale a few times over the years (it is fully engraved). N3 is a Model 29-2, N25 is a 25-2, and I think N27 is a 27-2 (maybe N29 is a 29-2???). N46 is the 46th frame stamped with what was the new serial number format at the time. I have N925, a 28-2 shipped in May 1970. I think the N prefix started in that year.
