MODEL 28-2 HIGHWAY PATROLMAN "NYSP" .357 NICE!!!
Picked this up today. Interesting how S&W modified this model 28-2 with a white outlined rear sight, red ramp front, wide target trigger and target hammer just for the law enforcement. I believe 3,000 were made for NYSP. I don't think this configuration was available to the general public unless you special ordered it. Gotta love that case coloring. Anyway just wanted to share this with the forum. I also noticed that the finish was a dulled appearance. Guess that was to cut down glare for the officer. Marked NYSP. Serial number dates to 1978 as per S&W. Enjoy the pics.

Thanks bamabiker. I wonder why S&W chose the smaller grips over the full size?? Were they not both available in 1978?????

Nothing special there, all 28 had the same dull finish as yours, whether for LE or not, with some very minor variations.

Thanks Diamonback68. I was not aware of the same finish for that model. You might think that was the reasoning behind that finish.

Nice find. Congrats! You might want to check the stocks, they are probably serial numbered to the frame. I believe, most M28-2's were shipped with magna stocks, and especially those going to LEOs. Great old workhorse.

I pulled the grips to check for a serial number. Nothing to be found. The bore is like a mirror.

Congrats on a nice HP! The only other 28's I've seen with the wo/rr have been commemorative models. And I like the magna grips, it looks right with the shorter barrel to me. That one would go for 5-600 bucks up in my neck of the woods nowadays.

I just bought another 28-2 with Magnas, and the last 3 digits of the serial # were printed in ink on the inside upper top of each grip above the escutcheon rounds.

Congratulations on the purchase and it's a beauty. The Model 28-2 is the same revolver as the Model 27-2 except that S&W eliminated the top strap checkering and the high luster blue to lower the price to make them more affordable to LE0's and the LE agencies.

Is that what the red ramp insert looked like from that era? I would have thought it looked like a mod. And not to be a complete buzz kill but I have never seen a white outline rear sight on a 28. Maybe changed out for a different part? I know they can be replaced.

I have an NYSP stamped 28-2 also. They were supplied with red ramp front site, white outline rear, and wide serrated target triggers.

I think you may be confusing the 3000 28-2s with the 3000 model 520s they pruduced and never shipped to NYSP.

I have a Md 28-2 NYSP revolver lettered from S&W. They were all produced with RR, TT,TH, White Outlined rear sight, mine has target stocks not sure if they all did or some had magnas and are stamped "NYSP" on the left side under the cylinder. They were replaced in 1981 with the SS model 681 and then around 90/91 all revolvers were replaced with the Glock Md 17.

being a NY'er I'd love to come across a NYSP marked wheel gun. Unfortunately our anti gun politicos decided some years ago to pass a law that used state issued weapons can't be released as surplus, they have to be transferred to other agencies or be destroyed. At one time during the federal assault ban (we still have a non sunsettting version in NY) Glock offered to give the NYSP new guns if they would trade in the old ones and all the pre-ban mags- they said no. when the NYSP recently got replacement handguns, they transferred the old guns to the dept of corrections. I imagine most of corrections old smiths were destroyed. what a shame. Back when they were still issuing revolvers they wouldn't even let retiring officers buy the old guns.

Let's not forget about the NYSP marked 65-3's from the early 80's.

They were issued to plainclothes folks at the same time the 681s went to uniformed Troopers. The 65-3s were 3"bbl and marked similarly.
Nice 28-2 - I've got one stored away as well.

The dull finish came on 28's because it is the 27 economy version.
The high bright polish would get costly on 3000 service revolvers.

First , Nice 28
The 28's were the "Utility" version of the 27. Same excellent parts , just a little less polish and milling.
Model 28-2 4" that were found with the red ramp front sight and the white outline rear sight "and stamped NYSP".
Also , am not sure I am understanding this correctly but 28-2's "of this variant" were only to have covered the N546xxx serial # range so I interpit that as no greater than 1K units.
They came with Magna or Target grips.
Based on the info found in Supica & Nahas's catalog

B. W., a whole lot more than that. They were made from 1961 'til 1982, 21 years of 28-2s.
Oh, I see what you're reading now.

Very nice revolver. I love K & N frames with the TT, TH RR and WI.
If you ever decide to sell it, please keep the Moosedog in mind.

Mitchsnap, Several years a ago I bought a "SPNY" also, model S&W 681 4" SS circa 1982. It to has an excellent bore etc, but needed springs. Wulff to the rescue. After all new springs etc, this is a helluva good shooter! Even with fixed sights, accuracy is dead one. Mine also was stamped in the same place as your Smith. I am very glad I bought this one.
