Default 28-2 Hammer slips?

I've a 28-2 s/n N2916XX. The hammer falls forward when pressure is put on the hammer. Sear? Gun shop that sold it to me filed and has it back now because it's worse after firing 20 rounds. Permanent fix?? (any idea approx manf year??)

Probably replacement hammer, the gunsmith probably ground or stoned the single action sear. Possibly trigger depending on how badly they screwed it up, possibly the sear

The SCoS&W says numbers starting at N200000 were made in the years 1974 through 1977. I would guess yours would be at the upper end of the range.

I do not understand the bold text. I am guessing the gun shop sold it to you after they (or someone else) modified it with a file(?) If that is true, what was filed?

You say the shop now has it back. Did they take it back to repair it? If so, what do they think the problem is? Or will they just ship it off to a gunsmith to diagnose and correct the problem?

I think that this is what is wrong with my 5" pre-27. Any forward pressure on the hammer causes it to release and it litterally has a hair trigger in single action.
I think my only option is to find a new hammer & trigger and take the gun to Cylinder and Slide to see if they can fix it.
I was going to ask this question but you beat me too it.

Thanks Jack. The shop that sold it used thought he knew the problem "rounded off". I assumed the sear and that he filed. Back to him to see what he can do. Thanks again for the s/n info.

The most often needed fix for push off is to stone the rear end of the trigger which is well described in 500 Magnum Nut's FAQ sticky in the gun smithing forum. A S&W's DA fly is sometimes call the sear, but the rear of the trigger functions as the sear in that it is the part that rotates the hammer to the rear end of the DA cycle and releases it. Push off can also be caused by a home gun smith's attempt to create a hair trigger by stoning down the hammer's SA notch. The repair for that is a new hammer. Your thread would be better located in the gunsmithing forum where it will draw answers from actual gunsmiths which I am not. Given that the store has agreed to fix the problem and already has the revolver, about all you can do is wait until they repair it, then let us know how it looks.
Good Luck
