A Target Trigger On A 3 1/2" Model 27-2?! Why?!!!
I know, what a crybaby. My 1975 five incher has a service trigger and hammer. They feel perfect. My "new" 3 1/2" gun from 1978 has target features. But having a trigger as fat as the trigger guard on a gun ideal to whip out of a holster fast seems strange to me. The target trigger feels better combines with my Kuracs, though. I'd actually prefer smooth thinner triggers on all my S&W's like I think are standard on L frame guns.
Now, that's as close to complaining I'll ever get about the coolest, most formidable looking sixgun of all time (next to my 2 1/2" Colt New Service). The 3 1/2" Model 27-2. Owners of Lew Horton 3" 24-3's might argue that point, though.

That 3 1/2" 27 is an extremely cool looking gun. If you were really upset about the target trigger I am sure one of these forum guys would be happy to take it off your hands.

I had a 31/2" 27 that I bought new in 1969 w/ TT and TH. Fat triggers give me better control and I added shoes to all my S&W's and single actions. I like a fatter trigger. I sold the 27 and all the rest I bought in that era were stolen.

I guess everyone has different preferences as to what feels better in their hands.
I had a beautiful Mod 58 that had a target hammer and trigger on it.
I strongly disliked that fat trigger. I don't like trigger shoes either.
The trigger was a tiny bit wider than the trigger guard and I made sure to tell the guy I sold it to to remove that trigger if he was thinking about carrying the gun in a holster.

The gun is cool and I agree with you. I don't even care for the target trigger on my 25-2. I suppose you could always change it out if it really bothers you.

I never could understand what motivated Smith to put target hammers and triggers on guns with medium length barrels. Perhaps these are customer special orders? I have a 27-3 4" with a target hammer and trigger. The trigger is also, for some reason, grooved. I've lived with these features on this gun for years and have no intention of changing them but, honestly, I'd prefer a smooth service trigger and a narrower hammer. Especially inasmuch as I fire the gun exclusively in da.

In September 1975, S&W improved the Model 27 by equipping it with a target hammer, target trigger, checkered Goncalo alves target stocks and a mahogany presentation case.
If the TT, TH, and TS are not what is desired, they can be replaced with the standard trigger and hammer and Magna stocks.

on some guns,i love the wider target trigger.on some guns i really like the smooth combat trigger..to me it depends on what gun is being shot.i know one thing, every gun that was made with wide or smooth triggers is a classic gun.

Me and my buddies were fondling a S&W model 19-3 chrome 6"er that came into my buddies gunshop, pinned/ressed today, and started talking guns. My buddy told me he has a factory model 66 with 2.5" barrel with TH and TT, I made the same remark "why" but each to there own! I think I would order a gun whith Target features on a carry gun if we could carry here in Canada! Thank god you are all free to bear arms, don't ever let them take it away, your Canadian brother, Dale Z!

I know my 4-inch Model 29 and Model 57 both had target triggers, but my 3 1/2 inch 27 does not. (I know that's really not helping is it?). Personally I like the target trigger, but I can certainly live without it, and sometimes in a defensive gun (although as accurate as my short barreled 27 is I would like to see if a whitetail can get close) that standard trigger is a benefit. I guess its a preference.

Sorry to hear that, Z. I've thought that was the situation in Canada then a Canadian guy would discuss their handguns on a forum (maybe this one) and I was surprised they could own them at all. I don't know the particulars of your laws but it's too bad it's like that. I'm in California where you can't carry a concealed handgun unless you're a cop or a criminal. the rest of us are out of luck. And many older guns aren't allowed into the state like ANY S&W that's not made anymore and is younger than 50 years old.

Do you know for sure that the fat trigger is original to the gun? It might have been changed or special ordered.

I have a two 27-2's: a 3 1/2" and a 5" both with target hammer, trigger and stocks. So perhaps it's relatively common.

I'm a fan of the TT - but smoothed. I had several of my TT's smoothed when I customized the revolvers. Highly preferable.
I'd also like to offer my submission for THE most awesome looking carry piece. I do like blued guns, but don't overlook the 624.

I put a target trigger on my model 10 with 2" barrel. I could shoot it better that way. There was a gunstore in Atlanta that sold target hammers and triggers. This was in 1976.

My 5" 27-2 came to me with TT and TH, but I put a WTT ad in the classifieds here and swapped them for the service hammer and trigger from a 28-2.
I can live with the fat hammer, but not the serated fat trigger - it just don't feel right.
My 5" 29-2 has a smooth wide trigger and that works OK for me.

My first retail job as a teen was at a fairly large, established GS in Raleigh, NC.
Started there in 1974 and was there off and on 'til '79. We sold parts as well as many S&W accessories such as TT's, TH's, rear sights and blades, magnas, smooth and checkered target grips, etc.
It was very common for us to sell TT's and TH's to the more hardcore Smith revolver shooters as parts to 'upgrade' their guns. They usually went in with no real fitting needed.

My first 3 1/2" 27 came with a TT. I like it better after making it smooth, but for quick double action shooting I would prefer it be a little narrower.

Styles come and go. In the fifties and early sixties, people actually paid money for trigger shoes! I happen to prefer a narrow trigger with grooves removed and face rounded, smoothed and polished, which came in in the eighties. I still think that it's best for almost all DA guns, and works fine in SA, also, at least with Smiths, which routinely have great SA pulls.
I did leave the TT on my 29-2. It's not really hurting anything, and it IS kind of classic. But my carry .44 Mag is a 3" double Magnaported PC 629, and that has a narrow case-hardened trigger, rounded and polished, just like it's supposed to.

Around 1974 or 75 S&W started fitting all 27-2s with full target options. Everyone knows I dislike target stocks on the short barrel but most folks tend to disagree with me. I do like the wide, smooth trigger and have this type on most of my 27s. But I think target stocks are too big and look unbalanced with a 3.5" barrel.
This looks good to me...

SaxonPig,
That factory .400" semi wide smooth trigger is my favorite trigger as well. I've put them in several of my shooters. That way I don't loose the case colors by smoothing up a grooved trigger. Grooved triggers, wide or narrow, on guns shot DA just shred trigger fingers!

I bought a new 27-2 around 1970. It had zero options. Sent it back to smith and had tt,th, magnas replaced with smooth presentation, wo/red post and name engraved in gold on the sideplate, bought the presentation box.
I wouldnt do it again, but still have the parts.

Believe it or not there are people out there who only shoot S&W revolvers in single action. Big fat trigger makes it feel like a 1 lb. trigger when it breaks. All of my S&Ws have had the target triggers replaced with skinny ones because I shoot almost all double action. But I agree that it seems kind of strange to see a TT and TH on a snub.

Mine has TT TH White outline rear sight and yellow front sight insert.
I too prefer the TT and TH.
I replaced the standards on my Model 58 back in 1966 and got use to them.

No doubt a Target Trigger is better for single action shooting, than a thin trigger, IMHO of course.
I have no problem shooting one for Double action.
Still most people now prefer a smooth trigger. The first smooth triggers from S&W that I remember were wider than a standard trigger.
Then many would grind off the lines of the trigger and round it off a bunch also.
It is simply a matter of personal preference.
I would only use an attachable trigger shoe on a match gun. NEVER on any kind of protection gun or any gun I put in a holster. NEVER.

Thank you. That gun finally caused me to break down and get an appropriate BBQ rig to carry it in.

Isn't having such a wide range of choices great?
Grips, triggers, barrel lengths, hammers and finishes all are a matter of user option and choice. Look at all the choices S&W has given us through the years!!...
What could be prettier than Iggy's Mod 27? What could fit his needs and desires better..... Same with Saxon Pig's, dbracin's and feralmerril's personally modified 27's....
Everyone has made a great case for their preferences... I know I appreciate everyone's generosity to do so.... That's how we learn...

I have seen 2" Model 10's with Target Hammers and Triggers.....why that would be desirable, who knows, but someone wanted those options!....so there's no set "guideline" for what guns are supposed to have the TT/TH. There's a 2" 10 in the SC of S&W, it apparently came from S&W with the TT/TH.

Too bad now S&W just tells you to take whats offered in the catalogs, or there rendition of a customshop gun, sad state of affairs, tryed to order a couple N frames made up into TT TH Outdoorsmans, told nolonger doing custom work no matter the price! Must be nice to say no to good money, wish I had that problem!
Love that there are others with short barreled target Smiths, Dale the Cannuck!

sign o' the times
Back in the late 70s, when your gun was made, the TH and TT came standard on S&Ws top-of-the-line, super-impossible-to-get Model 29. For most other revolvers, the TH and TT were expensive options. Now, about this time there were very few people seriously shooting their guns as progressive reloading machines and organized action competitions were in their infancy, so relatively few had figured out that a wide trigger, while givng the operator some slight advantage in single-action, was actually a bit of a detriment to fast and accurate DA shooting.
The result of all of this was that most considered the Target goodies as upgrades, making their personal guns a little better. They were, indeed, all the rage.
It is VERY common to find Smiths from the late 70s sporting the expensive Target options. I own a 2" Model 15 Combat Masterpiece, of all things, from that era that has it all.
