I don't have my books with me, but that is a "floating J" serial number. It will be somewhere around 1972, give or take a year.

I too don't have my book handy but you should ask Santa to bring you the SCSW (Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson).
The info you seek and about 800 more pages are in there. Well worth the asking price.

Ash, it can't be from floating J period. Those only had one up to three digits before and after the J. His is from 1982 when they went to the 1J with four or five digits after the J.

Dick, I'm pretty sure that you're absolutely correct. I didn't really look at the length of the number. I should be more careful throwing out information without really paying attention (and going off the top of my head). My apologies to the OP.
