Default Is there anything the model 28 Highway Patrolman can't do?

So, I just bought my third 4" model 28. Why do I need 3? I have no ideal. But the price was right.

But it got me thinking about the model 28 Highway Patrolman. Other than the weight & barring Grizzly/Brown bear, is there anything this heavy frame .357 magnum can't do? And that same weight will come in handy when shooting full power .357 loads.

The .357 Magnum was the street king for many years. And on the trail, it should handle most critters. You can even target shoot & hunt with it (Colonel Doug Wesson promoted the first Magnum by using it to take antelope, moose, elk, and grizzly bear). It also shoots a wide assortment of bullet weights. And you have the choice of light recoiling .38 spl., all the way up to the hottest .357 magnum load.

I know it's not the big bore everyone in enamored with right now, but in most situations, this gun should do the trick.

And unlike it's prettier (and pricier) brother the 27, they can be had all day long in several barrel lengths in the $400 to $500 price range.

So, if you haven't looked into the 28 yet, get one before everyone relizes just how great these guns are.

And if you need further motivation:

Dump, they can't clean themselves! I looked at a beautiful 1 (28) in the box at gunshow a few weeks ago. Asking $595. Too rich for my blood! Just bought a 65-3, that was more in my budget, and a nice clean gun. Enjoy your purchase! Bob

Is there anything the model 28 Highway Patrolman can't do?

I've never seen one shine like a 27, or be available in as many different sizes, but that was kinda the point of the M28 in the first place, more basic and more affordable. The more affordable days are behind us now, the word is already on the streets about the M28.

Maybe not slice, but I guarantee it could make a nice "hollow point salsa." Just bought this nice 28 from forum member. It had TT/TH/TS when I bought it, and it is going to S&W for RR/WO sights. It also already has it's own recliner (presentation case). I know, it didn't come with these enhancemants, but I think that it is worth it! I'll post better photos when it gets back from the groomers.

The Model 28 is a great revolver and it's identical mechanically to the Model 27. S&W wanted a lower cost model to sell to LEO's and Police Departments so to cut costs they dropped the high polish needed for the high luster blue and they also eliminated the cut checkering on the steel top strap.

I have two 4 inch and a 6 inch 28-2 and they are all excellent shooters.

Congratulations on the purchase

If I could only have one revolver for all around use, it would be a Mod 28 with 4" barrel.

The devil just made me buy another one (details and photos posted later) a 1959 4". They can't go to the fridge and get me a beer but they are good at disposing of the empty cans.

Is there anything an model 28 can't do? Nag, (make that comment) you are spending to much money on guns, ammo, and you are spending way to much time at the range.

You never pay too much for a weapon, sometimes you just buy too soon.

Besides price the advantage the Model 28 has over the Model 27 is that it requires less care to maintain its appearance .
Also doesnt hurt as much to abuse it.

Is there anything the Model 28 doesnt do?...Well It doesnt fit in a K frame holster.
As for the tomatoes Id say its more of an explosive puree when done correctly.

Comparing a Model 28 to a Model 27 Is like comparing US GI Model 1911 to a shiney new series 70, same gun different level of finish.

Ya can't file yer finger nails on the top strap! Do you remember a few years back they were tryin' ta sell "salad shooters"? It would work well for that, especially shredded cabbage.
Who remembers the Skeeter Skelton story where he related that a visiting lady friend wanted a piece of dead catus for a house decoration? They were in the "boonies" and had no saw so, Skeeter shot it 'til it fell over. She told all her friends the Skeeter shot it for her! I believe the article was about the utility of the .357 mag. In short, There are prettier .357s,there are lighter .357s, but there probably ain't no better than a good model 28 as a utilitarian tool. Nick

I have, the Washington State Patrol commemorative 1982 model 28-2 had the high polished finish. No top strap checkering, though....

Smile I think your wrong..

"But it got me thinking about the model 28 Highway Patrolman. Other than the weight & barring Grizzly/Brown bear, is there anything this heavy frame .357 magnum can't do? And that same weight will come in handy when shooting full power .357 loads."

There is more than one school of thought on the Big Bears. Hunting for them with a .357 wouldn't be my first choice. A bow and Riot gun for back up works. A rifle would be better. Bears will bluff to 6 or 8 yards. If you wait on a bear that you really don't want, when they are that close the only thing that can stop them is a Brain or Spine shot. The .357 has done that many times, and it is a lot easier to get multiple accurate shots with one than a .44 Mag or any of the newer uber mags.

So if you do your part, that 28 will do its part. Just for the record .357 Mag bullets don't bounce off Bears.

Best to you all

Bob

I guess I was wrong, the 28 can do it all (in a firearm roll of course).😉

First, my favorite Smith is a M28-2, 4". It's lack of "bling" is what endears me to it. At my home, it stands out in a sea of nickel Smiths. It is just a no nonsense weapon that will do its job very well if you do yours.
As for what it cannot do, well, I have two of them and they do not breed.

I have a model marked 28-2 that shoots 44 specials and accomplishes this very accurately. It is also marked GSP (GA State Patrol, I presume) above the trigger. It is my most favorite S&W to shoot !

The model 28 is a great gun! I remember when I couldn't come up with the cash for a 27, I did manage to put together the bucks for a slightly used, not abused 28. It did every thing the 27 did and depending on your taste, could look pretty good while doing it. I have a 6 inch 28-2 and it will outshoot all 3 of the model 27's I own, in the Ransom Rest. As for quality of the barrel, sights and fire control components, I don't believe there is any difference between the 28 and 27 other than cosmetics. And that don't amount to a "hill of beans" when it comes to terminal ballistics !!!

Well it aint as pretty as a 27. Besides that it hides dings, nicks, and blood stains better than any gun I've owned.

[QUOTE=Dump1567;136216327]So, I just bought my third 4" model 28. Why do I need 3? I have no ideal. But the price was right.

Not to many,I had 6, 4" model 66's a while back. enjoy the 28's. They are great.

too late the secrets been out and the prices do reflect it. I always knew they were good since dad had one. Back when they were readily available for under 250.00 I grabbed another. I am glad i did because it was like new and a great gun. The same with a four inch a bud gave me. The only real issue I have or have heard of is ya can't shoot long heavy bullets in them although I have not really tried myself yet and could have heard wrong...
