Stocks on 14-3
I bought this nice 14-3 today that was fitted with these grip panels. The back strap is exposed except for the top which has a noticable swell on the right side. Can anyone tell me who made these? The gun dates to 1971. I'll post pics of the whole gun later.

I don’t recognize them as any particular make. Have you removed them and looked for markings on the inside? That may provide other clues.

There are no markings that I can see on the inside. They fit pretty well on the K-frame, and look to me to be rose wood. I could be wrong on tht assesment. I plan to replace them with someting more standard in the S&W aera.

I'm certainly no expert on grips but I was at a show with VM yesterday and we saw some nice rosewood grips that he thinks is early Craig Spegal grips. He showed me how Spegal put a wood plug in the right side panel to cover the screw hole. It looks like your's is plugged the same way.
Your's looks very nice and well made.

If they are Craig Spegal grips then you got some good ones as his grips are wonderful.

After getting home from the N. Atlanta gun show and reading the replies to my original post I looked at these grips and they do have a plug on the right side. You have to look closely to see it, but it's there. I had swapped them out to a M-13-2 so my M-14 could have some period Magnas. The rosewood finger groove grips (possible Spegal) fit the K-frames as good as any aftermarket grips I have seen. The 13 did not sell, but several people commented on the stocks.
Gun show Report: Good attendance on Saturday, but little money and few guns. Sunday was light, but more nice guns and more money being spent.

I may be wrong (I am most of the time), but those look like early Fuzzy Farrant or Stark (Walter Stark, LAPD) stocks. Very nice, and if so, very desirable and collectable.

I did a seach for Fuzzy Farrant and the grips I have do have many of the features I saw in the search results. The time frame (early '70's) also fit with the time they could have been installed on my gun. The gun, by the way, came from an estate of several other very nice S&W revolvers of the same time period, but I was only interested in the 14, as it had the TT/TH to match my pre-17 K-22. The next time I see the fellow who had the collection I will look to see if he has any more of the unusual grips.
I have attached pictures of the K-22 and the K-38, M14-3 with magnas installed on the 14. Unfortunately the lighting washes out the beautiful blue and case colors of the two guns. I'll work on my photography skills for better pics.
They are both going to get some range time in the near future. The 38 has a 7.75/2.75# trigger, and is as smooth as they get.
