Default Never have had one of these before now.

But I will have more. Traded a buddy at the range for this 31-1 4" 32 S&W long. Man is that a fun little J frame to shoot. Got 6 boxes factory load, 2 of reload, and brass and dies. Don't get much better than that.

I have really been missing out on this low end of recoil fun gun. Am already looking for others. FUN.

The .32 WCF in a hand ejector is a fine one too.
Nice fine by the way.

you are right about the fun factor. about 4yrs. ago I hadn't owned a 32 since the k-32 I had and sold years ago. now I have 8 different ones. colt and s&w. since you reload, you can shoot them about as cheap as 22lr. even cheaper for what the 22s cost these days.

Please help overcome my ignorance of the family of 32s.

What other ctg is compatible in guns that can fire the 32 S&W Long?

Can't the 32 WCF (32-20) also fire 32 H&R Magnum?

Where does 327 Federal Magnum fit in this comparison?

Thank you for your help in gaining understanding.

Biginge ~ "Another one bites the dust!" Welcome to the madness. Now all you need to do is either find a good 90-100 grain mould or a reliable source of bullets, and you're good to go. Congratulations and enjoy that neat little Model 31-1.

sac-gs ~ Any 32 round for handguns except the 32-20 can be fired in a 32 revolver with a long enough chamber. Thirty two auto and S&W (Short) have the shortest chambers, then the S&W Long, H&R semi-Magnum and 327 Federal Magnum are increasingly longer in that order. The 327 will take everything, and then you eliminate the longer rounds as you go down the line. You may have noticed that the "rimless" 32 Auto is included ~ that's because it's really semi-rimless. The 32-20 doesn't work because although the bullet diameter is the same (+/-) the case is a semi-bottleneck with too large a base for the other chambers. There ya go!

Froggie

PS You might be able to shoot a 32 H&R or a 327 FM round in a 32-20 chamber, but it would probably bulge and/or split the case. It would be very loose.

Shhhh. Don't tell everyone how much fun they are, that will drive the prices up. Glad you discovered the little jewel's. The straight wall 32's, 32 S&W, 32 S&W Long, 32 H&R Magnum, and 327 Federal Magnum are all in the same family. The most popular is the 32 Long which your Mod 31 handles. You may also shoot the 32 S&W (short) in your gun. If you get a 327 Federal you may shoot all 4 rounds. The 32 auto can work but is not recommended. It has a much higher pressure than the long and would be greater than a Plus P load in your gun. Start looking for a Mod 16-4 and you can have the chamber reamed for the 327 (if you desired) and shoot all 4 calibers. The 32 H&R mag, if you reload, can be loaded quite reasonably and is plenty potent.

You found a nice gun with a heavier bbl then the pre-war guns. The 4" bbl is a desirable length to me. You could load the 32 long a little hotter or have your gun reamed for the 32 magnum if you want. Really getting into this .32 thing lately. Had a custom K frame 32 made from a .22 last year and bought a 16-3 last month. Now I have a 32 PPC bbl, not sure what I'll use it for yet and another worn K-22 waiting in the safe. I could have a super accurate 32 made. The 32 is fun, Larry

You can load it with this
https://www.buffalobore.com/index.ph...t_detail&p=345

and it becomes a respectable self defense gun/round.

There is something to be said for low recoil...The 38 S&W is like that too...only trouble is no inexpensive ammo available...I have a Colt Police Positive in the 38 S&W that is a very pleasant shooter....Now I'll be looking at 32's....

The BIGGEST problem, as some around here will attest to, is that once one of those little rascals makes it to your gun room, the signs on the door and here come the rest and there is no way to stop it. You can see below that it just happens. Thought I'd try one, much like you have just done and suddenly you realize there were 110 years of history to go back on and sample its delights. I really love reloading something where 1.8 gr. of Bullseye powder is a hot load. That's 3,888 rounds per pound of powder. The recoil is a shear pleasure. Remember, like you, I started with one.

Thumbs up

I'm sure the .32 Long is a lot of bang for the buck if ya cast yer own bullets and load yer own ammo. Not much powder or lead needed. K-frame .32's were once very popular on the bullseye circles. A .32 J-frame would be a neat plinker.

Don't see .32 Long ammo very often. And lately , like any other not-so-popular caliber , it's very expensive when ya do. I see .32 S&W Short going for over $50/box.

Yes they are fun to shoot. I have a few, the Mod 31 in 3" and 4" barrel and a Police Positive in .32 also.

The .32 is great, very little recoil. I love shooting it when I can find the ammo at a decent price.

Not really that hard nor that expensive. Just right now, Cheaper Than Dirt has S&B 98 gr. wadcutter box of 50 for $20.09 and 100 gr WC box of 50 for $22.38 and Remington RN box of 50 for 25.90. It really isn't expensive ammo.
