Model 48 Find, Thanx 450 Racer
450 Racer had posted some questions about a Model 48 with .22lr cylinder and decided to purchase another gun. I asked him for the seller's contact info and ended up buying the gun. It is a 1973 model per SCSW, serial 5K71xxx. The thing that makes this possibly the most valuable model 48 out there is it is mismarked. Not just the ordinary wrong model like it being marked as a 15 or something, but they left the dash number off. It should be a dash 3 and there is no dash number in the crane. I figure I start it at $3000 on GB and watch it climb from there It is in beautiful condition with just a faint turn line and no holster wear, numbers matching magnas, numbered box, tools and partial docs.
Thanks again 450.

Yeah, they can be a pain in that they need frequent cleaning to function properly.
However, they deliver in return a lot of pleasure in shooting performance.
Here's a recent ammo test in my [no-dash] 48
Interesting in that the best performance, 1.1 inch groups at 25 yards were with the two cheapest brands of ammo - Winchester FMJ and Fiocchi JHP.
A bit surprised at how much higher the 45 grain Hornady and 50 grain Federal Game-shok printed with the same 6 o'clock hold on the 3" diameter target dots.
I think I'll keep mine.

Just curious about comments above. Three different 48's that were problematic suggests to me that .22 mag ammo is so dirty that it binds up the cylinder in short order.
I have been looking for a 48, not as a priority, but just in case one became available. The preference is for shooters, so I would not be willing to pay collector's prices, as the one shown above clearly commands.
Last week a pair of ANIB Colt New Frontier .22/.22 mag convertibles became available and were purchased to satisfy the desire to have a .22 mag. They have not been to the range yet, so I have no experience with them. Should I anticipate similar fouling? Which brand ammunition shoots cleanest? Thanks for any input.
Jim, best of luck with selling your 48 - hope you find the right buyer!

I have had a Model 48 since 1977 when I turned 21. I have shot thousands of rounds of .22wmr with no problems except for one shell case that split at the rim. You do have to keep them clean but it is not as bad as everyone says. I have said before and will say again if you have a 48 you don't like send it my way

Nice find glenncal1, I'm glad you got it and thank you for posting the fine pictures. It is also nice to hear that someone likes shooting the 22 mag.

I agree, and I sure wouldn't mind "having" that one...

I just snagged a 648. Has finger groove combat grips, but missing the rear sight assembly (it came with a Burris scope and mount). I'm looking for a rear sight assembly so I can take it out for a blast. Not sure it will be a gun I keep in the long run, but it caught my eye.

45B- I would guess that a sight from a 617 would be the same. Take a look at Numrich's and see if the part numbers are the same.

I have two M-48s, a 4 inch and a 6 inch and I shoot my 4 inch pretty often and have not run into the fouling problem, of course with the current price on magnums I don't usually shoot more than a box at the range. My 6 inch is a safe queen.
