WW2 Victory 38 Spl. Can put all 6 shots in the size of a quarter, one big jagged hole. Bought it for $140 about 15 years ago. Love that thing.

4", eh? I have 4" revolvers: a Colt Police Positive Special, a Colt Police Positive .38, and an S&W Victory in .38 special. The PPS has not seen much if any use and is around 60 yrs. old. I have not range tested it as of yet. The PP.38 shoots ok, I suppose, but the Victory, on the other hand, although somewhat beat up, and has a narrow dark stripe down one side of the bore, shoots like crazy and is the best shootin' .38 I have. It is inspirational and evocative to shoot it. Man! What a feelin'!
There are others in the pile, but those are all 6" or 2.5". All of my 6" revolvers shoot good.
The Victory likes low to mid range soft lead hollow base wadcutters. It was also my son's best choice when he was young.(Like age 10 or so.) I bought it as the daily special a few years back for $150 OTD. I have aquired some decent guns over the years that way. The trading post used to get something traded in at the shop and immediately put it in a special displsay case and often turn it the same day. It worked out for me a couple times.

My 4" 586 L-Frame(No dash) that I originally bought new in 12/81.
She is still a great shooter, as well as my 686 4" no dash and my 66-2 4".
In that order.

My 19-4 will do about 2.25" at 15 yards with a whole box of .38s. The model 10-5 pencil barrel does a little better, but opens up a little more as the shots stack up. Barrel on that sucker gets hot much faster.

Doesn't fit within the dates of this sub forum, but it's the 1951 or so 22 Combat Magnum on the right.

I would like to say my M28 4" barrel, but the truth of it all is that my Dad's 1949 vintage K-38 6" smokes all of them and my M28 is a GREAT shooter!

In 4", my Model 15-3 [or-4] that shows goodly use. Overall, my ~1980 6" Python in resplendent nickel, now retired except for admiring glances.

In 4" my original first year production M-66 with stainless frt & rear sights. The first 66 I ever purchased have had it since 1970.
In the 6" gun category I have several contenders... A circa 1964 6" K-38, all three of my PC Light Weight Hunters are tackdrivers, and a std 657 in 6" is a one hole shooter at 25 yds with 7.5 of Unique and a 220 gr Cast bullet.

A model 15 that I owned back in the mid seventies. I wish I had it back. Traded it for a model 19 and let it slip away also.

Results so far: a couple .44s, a couple .45s, a few .22s, and everything else (50+) either .38 or .357. Interesting. The .38/.357 numbers don't surprise me, but I'd have expected a lot more .22s.
Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

I have never really had a 4" revolver that stood out as extremely accurate. They have all been good but nothing special. My 6" Model 14 on the other hand is scary accurate and if I do my part will make one ragged hole at 25 yards.

It would have to be my 21-4, .44 spl.
And both of the 10-8s are about as good.
The pre 10 RB ('50) is a shade better than the the 10-8s in DA.
I'd like to say this was at 50 yds. Or even 25. But 10 to 15 yds is what it is.

The most accurate 4" revolver that I've ever owned is my beloved 18-3. With good quality ammunition it has put two cylinder loads into right at 1.5 inches at 25 yds. firing from a two handed hold off the roof of my little car. It shoots with a consistence accuracy that is routine. It is my all time favorite revolver.

Tough call. But if I had to pick one, it would be this 625 V-comp.
12 rounds slow fire.

The one that I shot the most accurately was a Model 66 4" that had an action job from a good gunsmith. I carried it on duty (shows how old I am) and tried to shoot it a lot. I could shoot it better than any handgun before or after.

My model 15-2 impresses me. It puts bullets spot on every time which helps the shooter. I have a 4'' model 28-2 that's runs an extremely close second.

Mt favorite 4 "
I like my 4" 14's best. They both are easy and fun to shoot and hold under 1" at 25 with WW 158 SWC or Precision Delta 158 SWC. They seem so easy to shoot well. Bob

3-screw Ruger Bearcat, simply because it's all I've got in that length. A 6" 686 is the most accurate revolver I have, if we ignore the length restriction.

1980 vintage 57...target was shot in 1983 a few days after I bought the gun from a friend. 25 yards double action. The one out was my fault not the guns. Swayed just as the hammer dropped...
657 Mountain Gun....this was 50' Double Action. The target was a blank B21PC silhouette and the low round was the first and aiming point for the rest.
I think most good quality revolvers are this accurate but what makes small hand held groups is the "shootability" of the gun. One can have a gun that from a Ransom Rest will put all its rounds through the same hole. But if the trigger pull is really ****** the best shot in the world isn't going to shoot the gun as well as they could with a good trigger....
Bob

I have a Model 18-0 that is awesome. Also Models 10 and 15 that shoot very well. I find that on a rest, all are really accurate, free hand, well, then I enter the picture and things get a little shaky.

Re." OP. S&W 18-3 that I bought about 2001 from an acquaintance at a local gunshow. Firing off-hand I've been able to shoot 6 shot groups with it at 60 long paces that measured under 6 inches. It is an exceptional revolver. I would not consider selling it.

For me it is the 28-2. I have posted a 50' indoor range target showing 5 shots in one hole. I think the quality of build then the weight, good sights and for me the grip shape and size make N frames perfect shooters.

My 629-6 PC has shot sub 1" groups at 50 yards and regularly 3" groups at 100 yards
Sorry! I just read the start to this thread, this obviously isn't a 4" gun. My apologies.

My 6" mdl. 10-5. It out shoots my 14, a flier is about a half inch off the main group. It loves a 146gr. DEWC that I cast. Bullet fitment must be right on with this one. I picked her up rust flecked and cleaned her up, not bad for a little over $200.00. A shooter for sure. Wish I could add a pic but something isn't right.
Probably me.
Best, Rick
