Default 629-1 TRADE FOR A P220 IN 9MM?????

I know this is mainly a S&W forum but it is taking forever for the admnistrator for the Sig Forum to accept me as a member. So I figured I'd throw this out there and see what kind of feedback I get. I currently have a 629-1 boxed and papered with 4 speedloaders, only the original grips and a holster that I was considering trading even up for this Sig p220 in 9mm. I've heard the 9mm is a little rarer than the .45. Also being that this Sig comes with original box, test target, and paperwork might make it a little more collectible considering it is from 1982 and from Germany. I have other S&W 44's and love them all. Just thought that this would be a fair trade considering there are more 629-1's out there compared to this Sig. Thanks for any input. Happy New Year to all!!!!

Personally, I would not do that swap. I own a Sig P228 and three Sig P225 9mm handguns, as well as several N frame S&W's. The Sig P220 is is larger than my Sigs, and heavier. Nothing wrong with a P220, I have owned one of those as well. I do feel that is is a large handgun for a CCW and it is also a single stack. There are better options out there than a P220 due to size, weight, and capacity.

The desireable P220's are the .38 Super and .30 Luger calibers.

The wood stocks on that P220 are a nice touch, BTW.

After doing a little more research, you are right ColbyBruce. .38 Super and the .30 Luger calibers are rarer.
Then I saw a P210 in 9mm.WOW!!!!!
Talk about rare and selling for big $$$$$$$.
Maybe my 629-1 plus some
cash on the other side I'm might do it.

I would not trade a 629 for a European mag release 9MM P220.

Even if it were the American version I would not do the trade.

NO! NO! do not trade a S&W for a SIG anything.
You will find that this is a much friendly forum then Sig. Some of the Sig member are very rude and disrespectful when you seek information.

I'd keep the 629. The 220 is a fine weapon, and I own a couple in .45 ACP, but in 9mm it would be pretty clunky...

BTW, is that a heel mounted magazine release? If so, the above comment is only amplified...

The German made P220 is an excellent weapon but that said I agree with the others as that's makes it a no go trade for me.

For concealed carry a P228 or P229 is a better choice because they are smalleer and still high capacity. For just shooting or home protection in a Sig I would get a P226 in 40S&W. I own all of these plus 3 P220's so I have some experience with them. I'm also not fond of the eurpoean mag release at the bottom of the mag either.

Well............ The more I think about it the more I'm going to keep my 629-1. The seller made it seem rare. Being boxed and papered in really nice shape. This is a great forum. It's nice to know you have a place to go for friendly information. Even if it is not related to the specifics of the forum. It seems as if the Sig Forum is taking their sweet time to "approve my acceptance" to login to their forum. With what is stated above about the Sig Forum may be true in all respects. Once again thanks for everyone's input. Have a safe, heathly, and happy new year.

Keep the Smith lest you regret trading it off. There are a lot of SIGs out there....not so many good, old Smiths...

You are probably right. I thought registering was of an automated system like verifying your email or something like that. All the forums I ever joined, I was quickly accepted. It is the holidays........

Good move! I have a old German made 228 and love it to death. Still use it for IPSC matches and it's NEVER had a malfunction! Well over 35K rounds and still is a house weapon. I trust it more than any other handgun I own, including my revolvers. As much as I love it and Sigs there's no way I'd trade your .44 for the 220. If it was a 220 Elite in .45 ACP with the beavertail and nice wood grips it might be a different story, as I'm a .45 fan and love that model.

This is a great Forum! I've learned alot about my S&W's from some very nice and knowledgable people. It's also caused me to spend some hard earned money buying them up. My wife put me on (No More S&W's) probation for one LONG year. If you stick around and see all of the beautiful specimens you may do the same. More addictive than crack I tell ya and I've seen some serious crack addicts over the years.

I know what your saying about the addiction. I just posted a 39-2 last week that I got boxed and papered for $400.00. Check out the pics in the post. Then I bought another one on Friday same way but slightly later S/N and not transitional for $450.00 with 4 mags. And now I'm looking to buy this 19-3 for $450.00(check out pics below). I'm tellin' ya it just don't stop.

Old Smiths are really nice but if it doesn't meet your shooting needs why not trade it for something that does.

The Sig is designed for use by LEO's and self-defense. It is a lttle on the large side for concealed carry. Since I am not a cop the heel release magazine catch doesn't bother me.

Your Model 29, well, Dirty Harry rest his soul, is not a practical choice for concealed carry and self-defense. It is a good hunting gun and for back-up in the field.

As others said I kick myself for passing a 38 Super 220 when they first came out.

The 220 was designed to replace the P210 as a service-grade weapon. But, I have never heard nor seen a plausible explanation for selecting a single-column, heel-release magazine design in a minor caliber handgun for a new issue service pistol. (One can only assume it might be because the Swiss intend to hit what they shoot at, and therefore think a large magazine is unnecessary... )

By the '70s, the dual-column design in a 9mm pistol had been well established for years, and of course the heel-release further hampers the gun in a fighting environment, given technique that was contemporary at that time (and still is).

As has been said, it is a big, bulky handgun with limited capabilities. You have to just want to own one for what it is. If that's the case, I suppose values are about equal - especially considering what appears to be Nill grips on the 220. If you have other S&W 44s, you might enjoy the trade, but I would advise to think of it only as a range gun. I have a 220 like that one, and like it, but I would never bother to put it in a holster. There are too many other handguns better suited to the intended job. It is a fun gun to take to the range.
