model 66 no dash question
Hello all,
I have not posted in awhile as I have been busy opening a new business which brings me to my question. I just bought a Model 66 no dash 4 inch from a gentleman, good guy and regular customer. He states the weapon was made in 1973 and my handy SCSW dates it at about 1973 as well. Here is the strange part, both front and rear sights are stainless and I always thought they eliminated the stainless rear sight in the first year of production. I am gonna price it under $500 and I just wanted to know if it was unusual for a 66 no dash to have the stainless rear sight that late in the production?
Thanks,
Indiuckian

The stainless sights seemed to hang on until about 1976 and up to the 7K2xxxx range (for the 4") so it doesn't sound unusual.

Thank you sir. I have seen them crossover a bit, i.e. 1971's with blued rear sights and now a 1973 with stainless.
That's why I love Smiths, just when you think you have got them figured out you really don't.

There was a 4" 66 I saw at a show 5-6 months ago that had stainless sights BUT the blade was blue. I ASSUMED it was replaced for some reason along the line, but who knows.

Hello, I am brand new to posting. I carried a 4k model 66 with stainless sights and a glow green/yellow front sight for the first twelve years of my 25 yr cop career. I always said I would save it for my oldest son. As luck would have it he grew up without much of an interest in the shooting sports other than on a video game. So I saved it for my daughter who graduates HS in a few months. Think that would make a nice grad gift?

Smith & Wesson was (is) famous for using up what they have lying around. If they are cleaning up and find a bunch of parts that they forgot about, you will see them on guns in short order. Not that it's a bad thing either, because a lot of the new-old-stock parts are better than the new stuff they are producing (IMHO). Colt used to do the same thing, as well as other Companies do to sure up their bottom line.
