No, the mostly likely explanations would be a cut-down (difficult but possible) or a mis-measurement (not going from muzzle to cylinder face). A recent GB auction stated this but it is clearly a 3.5" barrel (congratulations, by the way ).

Ive never heard of a 2 1/2 inch M-27 unless the Bbl was cut down. To my knowledge 31/2, 4, 5, 6, 6 1/2 and 8 3/8 Bbl were the only ones made. However I have heard that the 8 3/8 inch bbl; use to be in 8 3/4 inch length and was reduced in size to the standard 8 3/8. If im wrong im sure someone will correct me. Hope this helps.

If I remember, there was a maximum barrel length for bullseye shooting, and S&W reduced to the 8 3/8 to be within the max length.

That is true for the M27. However when first introduced in 1935 as the Registered Magnum it was available with any length between 3 1/2" and 8 3/4", or any length in between. Seems I heard anything between those two could be had in 1/4" increments.
Wonder how many were made in, oh, lets say 5 1/4" length?

The shortest was the 3 1/2 inch, and who would want anything less?

Don't they make a 627 with a short 2 5/8 inch barrel...
