Model 28 P&R vs non P&R value?
I was at my LGS today and he had a model 28 P&R. How much will it effect the value between a P&R and a non P&R model 28? Oh and it came with the box but the original grips may be lost. It has Hogue's on it now.

It all depends on condition, unless you get into the S serial numbered guns, then there seems to be a bit of a premium. Truth is, the 28-3 (the non- P&R version) is a bit of an unusual bird. I've got my eye out for one.
All things being equal, both guns in the same condition would probably sell for about the same price.

I don't know about the rarity of the non-P&R M28s, but my guess would be that P&Rs always bring a premium.

Regardless of whether it is a 28-2, which is pinned and recessed, or a 28-3, which is not pinned, but I believe may be recessed, if it is a 4" gun, you should snag it, as they are getting hard to find in LGS in my area.
You cannot go wrong with a Highway Patrolman. $600 is not too much for a good 4" 28-2 in my opinion. They are high quality, get the job done revolvers, and they are a blast to shoot. You can put as many .38specials as you want through it in a range session, and it will handle great.
Even put some Magnums through it during said session. They are snappy, but no problem for the mighty N Frame and a good grip.
If it is real nice shape and is being sold at a good price, you won't regret buying it regardless of whether it is a -2 or a -3.

For me, the P&R guns are the most desirable and I'd pay a little extra for them. However, any pre-lock, pre-MIM gun gets me about 90% of what I'm looking for. So, bottom line I might pay 10% more for P&R vs non, but could be very happy with either in the same condition.

Interesting question. Most S&W fans (I assume) would prefer the 28-2 with the P&R features for shooting. However, this is a discussion about collectibility (I guess that's not a real word?) and the question was about value and monetary value is often based on scarcity. Due to a much shorter production time and dwindling demand at the time I suspect the 28-3 is much less common than the 28-2 (and I'm sure an expert will correct me if I am mistaken in that assessment). So perhaps a 28-3 in collector grade condition is the more valuable of the two.
But then, what do I know?

What's a fair price for a 4" 28-3 with some use wear? Thing has honest holster wear but is in good shape. The wear isn't extreme but you can tell it spent some time riding in a holster. Mechanically it's in excellent shape. Locks up tight, functions perfectly, and shoots great.

Some think Collectible is a noun, as in "the M28 is a collectible"
Also, that Collectable is an adjective, as in "the M28 is collectable".
But you're probably right; they're not real words.

No kidding. The English language is going to h**l in a hand-basket.
Just try working out the conjugation of the new verb, "to text." It is plumb weird!

Not really sure. I kinda tagged on to your question with a similar one but the rest haven't been useful.

Well, I'm apparently a lousy judge of price these days.....I'd buy it at 500, I'd be tempted at 600, and I'd pass at 750.....but then I was blown away at the thousand dollar 28 that sold here a couple days ago.....

Fair is certainly a judgement call. I'm old, so fair is probably far less than what it would sell for. Since I'm looking for a -3, I'd be willing to pay 5 bills for it. Others maybe less, others probably a whole lot more.
