Default S&W Model 36 info needed

Hello from Green Bay, WI.

I just joined this forum and hope someone can help me or point me in the right direction.

I have 81 year old parents in Upper Michigan. My mother is sliding fast into dementia/Alzheimers and unfortunately attacked my dad with a hairbrush and a lamp. I had to make an emergency trip (226 miles) to sort out the situation. They have always carried handguns. I took all the guns out of the home and took them back home with me. I'm trying to find info on these weapons such as year of manufacture and ballpark value as I may have to sell them to help out my dad.

I have a 38 S.&W. SPL. Model 38 #613xxx that looks like it was hardly used. On a scale of 1 to 10 it would be a 9+.

I know this is a S&W forum but if someone can point me in the right direction for the following guns I would be very grateful.

Colt Police Positive 38 #366xxx very nice condition, seems like an old gun?

Ruger 22 Cal Long Rifle Automatic Pistol #481xxx - mint condition.

Galesi (Italian) 25 cal Model 503/b #484xxx - mint with box and papers - a tiny automatic my mom would carry when she traveled.

I thank you all in advance and God bless,

Doc

Doc,

Welcome to the Forum, and although I can't offer any expert advice on the values, I can extend heartfelt sympathy for your situation. If and when you do decide to sell, I'd post them here in the For Sale section first. You'll find that the Forum members here will give you a more than fair price.

Boy, this has been a day for some tragic news on the Forum. Sounds like you made a very wise decision to remove the firearms. Prayers and thoughts going your way.

Others can advise you on current value better than me, they will chime in shortly I'm sure.

I've "been there" so all I can say is good luck. As far as the S&W M36 email S&W w/the model and serial number. They get back to you in about a week with the DOB and I'm guessing the other manufacturers will do the same.

If you can post pics others can help w/value, but am guessing the Smith M36 would come in around $350.

Again, good luck.

Welcome to the forum. Sorry about your parents situation.
I’ll start with the simple issues, the dates and values. Photos of the guns would help.

The Model 36/38? is from the mid-1960’s. The Model 36 is steel frame gun with an exposed hammer, while the Model 38 has a shrouded hammer and an aluminum alloy frame. The Model 36 should bring about $350 and a model 38 might bring an additional $25-50.

The Colt Police Positive .38 dates to 1934. It’s chambered in .38 S&W / .38 Colt New Police, not .38 Special. Only the “Police Positive Special” was chambered in .38 Special and they’re marked as such on the barrel. Values are not terribly high and I would guess $250-$300 is close, but that’s sight unseen. “Very good condition” has different meanings to different people.

The Ruger pistol dates to 1968 and is probably worth about $200-250.

The Galesi dates from the late 1950’s early 1960’s and I think you’ll have a hard time getting $200 for it.

Now for the more complicated part. It’s a Michigan felony for your father to give them to you (a non-resident) and it’s a Federal crime for you to transport them across state lines. I’m not familiar with Wisconsin law, but Michigan has handgun registration and I suspect some or all of them were registered here. Your father/mother can sell them to a Licensed Dealer or to a Michigan resident with a Concealed Pistols License or a Handgun Purchase Permit, or they can have a Michigan dealer ship them to a dealer in Wisconsin and have them transferred to you (following WI and Federal laws) and then you could sell them there. I would take them back and have your father secure them until he decides the best way to sell them. Good luck.

I THINK what he meant to say is his elderly Father brought the guns to his house on a visit and forgot to take them back.

I do NOT know State laws BUT Federal laws, per ATF publication 5300.4 section 922 state firearms left in a will do NT have to be transferred through a gun shop.
