New to me 15-3 with finish challenges
I was lucky enough to acquire a nickel 15-3 w serial number 6K550xx through the help of a good friend. The revolver has a bit of a "finish challenge" in that there are probably a dozen areas that seem to have rust/finish issues. I have started with clp and never dull to see how much I can clean up. Any suggestions for addressing the finish different from what I am doing? Can someone please provide an approximate birth date? I look forward to running some 38 specials through this revolver. Thank you!

Shot it and don't worry about how it looks. If you the finish to look good it's off to be re-finished by a professional. That's expensive so you might just as well buy a good looking M15.

I believe born in 1974, according to serial #. If it is "finish challenged," I'd just clean out the innards and shoot it. I have a blue 15-3, the finish is actually pretty darned nice, original stocks, and I spent less than $500 for it. The answer in Post #2 above are my sentiments, too. Shoot it as is, and if you like it, leave it alone. Very excellent .38 specials. The blueing on mine from 1973 is nicer than my 1988 Model 10-8. You have adjustable rear sight, so if all works as it should, you can drive nails at 20 yds.

Smith model 15
Well it cleaned up better than I thought w a little neverdull. May put a bit more effort after shooting before putting it in the safe. Appreciate everyone’s input. Not bad for $200.

The nickel plating has definitely been damaged from neglect and there is no fixing it once it's down to the steel, then rust becomes the issue. But, for $200, it's still a winner, especially in today's inflationary market.

That looks to have been a police service revolver that was carried by someone who did not take care of his issued equipment.
