I don't think the 5" is "rare" really. Maybe scarce is a better word. I've got no idea how many were made, but I've got two of them.
This one is a -2 from 1978. It's been fired, but I haven't had a chance to myself yet.
And this one is actually from before they had model numbers. Made in 1954, it's a great shooter.

Me and you CajunBass!
My favorite shooter is a 5 screw from the mid 50s and I've got a 27-2 in the box that I bought from a buddy who won it on a tavern punchboard back in the late 70s.
This is the gun that got me into S&Ws and researching it is how I found this forum. I asked a newbie question of is it worth $500 and got about a dozen requests to pass on contact info if I didn't want it. I paid sellers ask of $500 and the rest is history.

Here is a model 27-2, 5 inch, that shipped in May, 1973.
It looked exactly like this when I bought it new in June, 1973.

Here is a typical all target 27-2 5" many are familiar with from the 70's.
Many of us consider it our favorite all-time S&W handgun and barrel length. I'd have all the N frame magnum calibers in a 5" barrel if I could find them...

Here's a 27-2 from 1978. It came in the Presentation Case with all tools, papers, etc. The stocks in the photo are rosewood from Sile, from a sale at CDNN some years ago for $9.95. I still have the factory Target Stocks. I see most of the 5" 27's in this thread have the Baughmann ramp front sight, this one has a Patridge which seems to be less common. I also had the Target Trigger replaced with the medium width smooth Combat Trigger when I had an action job done.

A 5" M-27 has been a "dream" gun for me for many years. My first favorite gun writer was Skeeter, and of course that is a gun associated with him. I could never find one and settled for a 4", then a couple of 6 inchers.. Well tomorrow I will be going to pick up ...yep...a FIVE INCH 27-2. I will post a pic of it tomorrow night. This is a little like Christmas Eve for me.

27-2. I bought this new around early 1970s and had the factory engrave my name in gold on it.

Here's a couple.......
that I used to have. A 27-2
A pre-27, Feb 14, 1954
and I'm only down to one 5 incher now, this one, May, 1939
This one is another caliber, but still a 5 inch.

I was starting to think I was the only one with the Patridge sight.

I wonder what percentage had the Patridge sight, opposed to the Baughman sight.
If I recall (someone correct me if I'm wrong), you could choose the sights for the Model 27 when you ordered one.

Pics of the 5" 27-2 I picked up today. Serial # is N479xx. I have no idea what year that would be. I took it out in the rain for a few shots, and WOW! The action is super smooth and without touching the sights my favorite load was spot on. I changed the grips to a set of Ahrend's . As I said earlier, this one is a dream gun for me so it won't be going anywhere until I do.

Great photos of some beautiful hardware, gentlemen. I wish I could walk into a local shop and find some such examples as many of you have but it's about unheard of here in California. Sadly.

Those look like cut-down Cokes to me.

Oh brother, save me.....
What is a good price for 5" with no box and a 90% or 95% finish? $850-$950?
I am dumping some single actions to fund one.
ETA:
Well......I might have been premature.... I found a 27-2 8 3/8" that is in LNIB... with the wooden presentation box and tools. I have a 3.5, a 4, and a 6 N frame. A 8 3/8th is a better step than a 5".

I love the 5" barrel....
I have 4 Model 27-627's:
1st is a 1st year Reg. Magnum.....
2nd... A 27-2 in Nickel (rarer than blue)...
3rd is a really rare bird... a 627 but in .38 Super...Perf. Ctr. with a ported Muzzle brake....
and finally... a Modern Perf. Ctr. Reg. Magnum - 8-shot.....

That is the way they were when I got them, but sadly the are modified Cokes. The modification is well done and I actually like the look and feel, but I cringe at the thought of modifying a nice pair of Cokes.
