Default Finally a pretty nice 14-3

I have been looking for a model 14 for a while. I have seen several in really bad condition and a few good ones that were gold plated, or so the guy selling it thought so.
We only have about 5 gun shows a year, so its a big deal to me when we have one. This weekend was a show weekend.
I show up friday about 3:15. It opened at 3:00 and I didnt want to seem too anxoius so I waited 15 minutes.
About half way through the tables I saw A pretty nice 6 inch K frame. I look a litle closer and see that it is a 14-3. It had a price tag that was at least $150.00 too high. I kept walking to look at the rest of the tables. I really didn't see anything else that I was interested in so I went back.
They had it in a glass case, so I asked the lady if the price was negociable because I wasn't going to look at it closer if that was the firm price. She said she would talk.
I looked it over and was really impressed. It was in real good condition but it had no box and someone replaced the original grips with Altimont rosewood grips.
Well, I made an offer $150.00 less than their asking price and she took it. Woo Hoo. I really dont want to say how much I paid cause it was more than it was worth, but I wanted it.
Now I am one happy model 14 owner.

Oh Yea,
I forgot to say it is a 14-3. Serial number 8K77521. That gives it a ship date of 1975.
If it had a box, tools, and paper work, I probably wouldn't shoot it. Since it doesnt, I probably will but I will be very careful not to ding it up.
Who ever had it before buggered up the side plate screw that holds the cylinder in but other than that it looks good with only a very faint turn line.

I recently got a 5 screw pre-model 14, overpaid a bit for it too, first time shooting it I realized it was worth every penny I paid and more.

Looks like you got a dandy there.

From what I hear, it sounds like there was a pretty good crowd at the show today.
I'm thinkin' when your kids or grandkids are shooting that gun years from now you won't think you paid too much for it.

Enjoy.

No I wasn't up there. I just got a email from Thom Braxton. He had heard from someone that there had been really good attendance at your show.

He's down in Brule NE and they had good crowd there too.

I have been fondeling this gun ever since I got it home. I am having a hard time getting past the aftermarket grips.
Could someone post a picture of a set of grips that might have been original on this gun? I am thinking magnas since it doesn't have a target trigger or hammer.
Thanks

Here's a 16-3 from 1971 with it's original magnas, probably what came on your 14-3 also.

I just bought a 14-3 single action only, 1973, very good shape for $636 otd a few months ago. I've been shooting it a lot. Incredibly accurate, delightful trigger and perfect balance. I'm going to shoot the snot out of it over the next 10 years, or until my arthritis gets bad enough to reduce me to .22 only. Yes, I have a 17-3 and 18-3 for when that happens. I expect to get $1,000 worth of enjoyment out of the gun, and have some residual resale value or an interested child or friend in getting a nice gift.

Nice looking find! Enjoy.

I also picked up a minty 14-3 single action only minus grips for $475, so as long as you paid less than what a new model 14 is going for, you are way ahead of it in my estimation. Every area has differrent prices due to local tastes, nice gun and have alot of fun with some wad cutter, 2.7 or 2.9 Bullseye and a 148 wadcutter and you will blow out the centre of the target all day long at 20 or 50 metres! You were content with the price, and you are extremely happy with the gun. Nice looking 14...can't ask for much more. Congrats.

Cool

Regardless of what a person collects, you can tell quality.

The model 14 S&W is, in my amateur opinion, an expert's instrument for target shooting.

If you are, or can find, a quality gunsmith to go over it, well, you will be thoroughly satisfied in its performance.

The model 14 makes target shooting, almost easy.

Please take it to the range and report back to us.

Here's a 14-4. Like yours a shooter, shot little before me and I don't shoot her enough. Those are some good looking panels though. You might really like them. You will really like her.

Best, Rick

Wingmaster, you got a good one. As I like to say you can't pay too much for a good Smith & Wesson, just too soon. That is a realy great find, in great condition. I have 3 now and would not sell them for twice what you paid, whatever that may be. They will be the last to go if I ever get rid of any of them. Great shooters that make us look really good.

Regards

Bill
