Default Custom K Frame Target Grips

These grips came on a model 14-3 I just purchased. They appear to be walnut, and there is no writing or stamping anywhere on them that I can see. Anybody know anything about them or what they might be worth? I'll probably sell them since I don't use this type of grips.

PM, have you tried shooting with them yet? I don't like this type of grip myself, but I bought a set reasonable for my 28. (n frame) I shoot pretty darn good with them on. I don't think that the value is too high, as they are on ebay (similar ones) fairly cheap. Bob

I personally don't like grips with finger or thumb grooves for shooting. I have several guns with the factory combats and I always switch them out for regular target grips when shooting. I'm with you on the value of these custom grips, maybe $40-50 tops.

I am going to say that those are home made by a shooter who is talented with wood working.

That's pretty much my take since there's no writing, stamping, or marking on the back...

Not exactly the same, but pretty similar looking, but Don Collins says these are "one of a kind" which means they may all be custom and these are just an example (from his website). Maybe he can tell you if those are his.

Thanks for the information. I emailed Don with some pictures, I'll post his reply when I get it.

Just received a reply from Don Collins, who says these are not his work. I agree they do look similar, though.

Those at Collins' site appear to be refurbished/refinished Sile/Herrett's/Fitz stocks. I agree with moosedog and the others that yours are one-off custom stocks someone created themself.

Not really my taste, but interesting anyway.

Anyone here have Don Collins grips on there S&W? Would like to see them if so, as I'm considering ordering some from him. Maybe you do PMRet? I've been eyeing his website for some time, but have not seen anyone post a photo with his work. Maybe we need to setup a thread with his work???

There is a set that look like these on flea bay right now with an opening bid of 29.95. If that is your auction I apologize. If not I think they are a bit cosmetically challenged, how do they feel.

Here are a few shots of some Don Collins grips on a Model 10-6

Here is the straight poop about Collins Grips as Elroy sees it:

They're excellent.

But to nit pick there are a few issues. It's up to you make the call.

First off, Don returned my E-mails promptly. There was NO dickin around. Upon receipt of my payment, the check was deposited quickly. The grips shipped well packaged immediately upon clearing the bank

The exterior finish is very smooth and simply flawless. Smooth as a baby's ***. The registration on the mounting points of the frame is very tight. No slop here. They Flat out fit with NO SLOP!!!

The contours fit to the frame is perfect. But there are a few issues.

They're FAT !! They over hang the frame all around by maybe .010 or so. You can see that in the photo. The offset is a little too deep as well. There is maybe a .005 gap with the frame (ya nit pickin bitch). Overall they fit very well.

The biggest complaint is that the grip screw goes in backwards????

It's a stainless screw that's been sheared to length so it's rough on the end. Would have preferred a fillister head black screw. Over all Don's workmanship is journeyman level. Very nice!!!

A skilled and professional craftsman !!!

A set of N-Targets

A couple of Don Collins grips

When you order from Don make sure you indicate if they are for a Pre-war or Post-war revolver. The grip frames are different lengths !

Hmmmm,
While not exactly my taste, I'll bet for the intended purpose of Target Shooting they would be quite formidable. I too believe that they were made by a private individual and not a "Grip Maker" - probably to exactly fit the former owners hand.
