To me that would the very top end of retail. A "deal?" Not by my definition of a "deal." You have to decide how badly you want it.

IF it was in 99% condition...not likely with no box or papers IMO...that is at the very tip-top of what I'd pay. Certainly no 'deal'.

I haven't seen many (any) 99% 5" 27-2s anywhere for much less than $700, so if it checks out after your inspection, I'd say thats a pretty good deal. To me 99% is basically like new though...NO flaws other than that it isn't new and unfired.

I just saw one on a gun sale site (GA? GB? I fell on it on the while doing something else) for $895, and I can't imagine that's a decent price. I think you are doing pretty well.

The following is just my opinion. Buy it. Doubtless there will be others who will describe buying just such a revolver in equal or better condition, etc., at a lesser price. And you can go on looking until you perhaps find what you are looking for at that lesser price. But personally if the revolver checks out as described, if it is well timed, etc., I'd buy it. Years ago (here we go...) I saw and bought a simply beautiful 18-3 that was just about 98 maybe even 99%, but no box/tools, etc. I paid $350 for it. At that time, that was about $50 "to much." Now, 8 years later, I could not hope to buy this revolver in this condition for such a price. I've enjoyed these 8 years of heavy usage. I have used it to teach my daughters how to shoot and enjoy handguns. Today it is a beautiful revolver that gives me continued pleasure. And the $50 extra that I paid is of no consequence. So, if the revolver you are looking at checks out as described, I would buy it and enjoy it. Again, this is just my opinion. Sincerely. brucev.

^^^This^^^
Besides I'd call $700 average...
My reasoning is similar to brucevs. I started with duty/off-duty/shoot the snot out of 'em S&W revolvers I just "liked" 40 years ago. This affectation evolved into "collecting" S&W revolvers, through accumulation of 4" and 6" versions of the K and N Frames I liked to shoot. There were, of course, exceptions, including the burning desire for 2.5", 4" and 6" M19s (I'd used all 3 on duty)...and then M66s. Once accomplished, with extras to spare , I decided to go with that trend and add a 3.5" M27 to the 4" and 6" already in the safe. Unable to locate a 3.5" at what I felt was a reasonable price I noted 3.5" take-off barrels could be found and it seemed no one really wanted the 8 3/8" M27 (including me ),...they could be had dirt cheap, though this was quite a few years ago. Intending to make my own 3.5" M27 I bought an ANIB 8 3/8" M27...only to see the 3.5" take-off barrels pretty much dry up . It was then that two things dawned on me; first, all 3 of my M27s were in fact M27-2s and an excellent condition 3.5" M27-2 became available for a reasonable price . To **** with the budget and financial planning, I "needed" the 3.5" M27-2 . You see where this is going, right? In fact I'd imagine others here have been in the same exact watercraft . The search for the grail 5" M27-2 (to complete the "M27-2 Factory Catalog Standard Barrel Collection") began. Finally, I found an excellent 5" M27-2, whose only fault is the white insert front sight. I paid an "early" price for it and was happy to do so . This happiness lasted until further reading turned-up the fact that the M27-2 also came from the factory catalog with a 6.5" barrel ...now that took a while ...
It's your money, buy it
