Just bought this beauty from a nice gentlemen on here... This is a Bill Davis Custom PPC. It is built on a Model 10-7. I am replacing the current grips,<I think they are a micarta or some other kind of hard plastic composite> with the same style only in Indian ebony... replacing the under-lug with a full block and thinking of slabbing the sides of the barrel.

Something crazy.. I am also throwing the idea around of getting it nickel plated....nickel-plated PPC, weird huh? Once I am through with this gun, it will be my baby... Can't wait to get it there!

I like PPC guns and yours is a fine example. I know where there's a Powers Custom 686 for sale. Unfortunately, I can't afford it at this time.

Thank's, I was gonna get that done to my 686 plus... you know the works, but being just a casual shooter I couldn't afford the almost 3 thousand from Clark's to get my L frame to where I wanted. Trust me, I know where you are coming from.

nice gun

i've owned a few PPC customs in the past, i wouldn't change a thing, much less have it nickeled (way to shiney when shooting)

grips look like original Rogers combats ~~~ best grips i've found that fit my paws

Default Davis

The Davis one is over 20 years old and still holds x-ring even if I dont.
2 tone built by Craig Maravio ? Davis gunsmith after Davis closed for my wife when she shot and a AT Custom slabside. Just cant seem to part with them even though they get shot less every year.Bob

Thanks to all above... and nice guns, those three look like a fun day.... I know the grips are amazing.. I am having them copied down to the last detail carved from ebony... As to the nickel plating...I am going to keep the sights blued of course.. just imagine trying to get a sight picture staring down that thing with the sun over your head!

Question.... what do you guys think of slabbing the barrel and swappin the under-lug? You wouldn't change it?

This is my Clark Custom PPC Model 10-8. In the photo it shows the Aristocrat rib with the sight adjustment on the rear, but I did not like it, so I bought a Bill Davis Aristocrat rib with the three position adjustable front sight, and installed it on the gun.

Congrats! Very nice revolver and the others are in that group too. Was lucky to have shot one years ago and it had the best trigger of any S&W I ever shot. Was young and can't remember the model or who did the work.

one i should have never sold, was a custom PPC python that i had in the early 1980's ~~~ was told it was built by a gunsmith out of Texas ~~~ slab douglas barrel, Bo mar rib, conical barrel end, double action only with contoured trigger for a right-hander, and the smoothest action i've ever felt on a colt ~~~ also the best staged position i've experienced

after trying it about a half dozen times in my PPC league, i went back to my S&W k38, definitely a better gun than my skillset

I'd consider that. An original Davis gun might not be a Michelangelo, but I wouldn't tamper with it at this point unless something needs repaired. It's an artifact and doesn't really have much to do with "the modern world." Why change that?

The underlug was part of the package. I found the 3 position adjustable front sight rib on EBay for $150.00, and sold the other one for $125.00 to a friend who was looking for one for his PPC gun.

I have to ask. What is the meaning of your screen name, it's got me curious?

I might just have to put together another PPC gun.. or find a newer one... looking at everyone's responses on here got me to thinkin.... maybe the only thing I should do to this gun is give it a nice, deep re-bluing.
As to my screen name I got it off of a wal-mart shirt "Haters made me famous" and 8,4,and 5 are my lucky numbers... its kinda stupid I know but hey it's a screen name.

Hey ,H8 for short, if you check your Davis gun the early ones have a pin in the underlug, like yours, and that helps hold the yoke tight, later they used a ball and detent in the yoke and frame, I had one that had both, anyway if you put another manufacturers underlug on it probably wont have the pin.
You might be able to find a full underlug as one model (grade V) I think had both underlugs, had one of those at one time so someone might have a spare underlug they dont use or just sitting around.
If you want another PPC gun check your state for a Police
Shooting ASSN, most have a website that has a classified section, cause outside PPC shooters not much of a market for 50 ounce revolvers. Good luck , Bob

I would not change anything mechanical about the revolver. Want to change the sights/grips, ok. A refinish, that is not shiny, like electroless nickle, ok, if it does something you need or value. Change the barrel stuff, etc - HELL NO.

Thanks for the advice.. not changing anything I hadn't considered all of this.. previous posters have said the same thing. I do not think I will nickel plate it now or change the barrel or even the under lug.... I will most probably just send it to S&W and get it re blued < it needs some finish work> and I am going to have a pair of Rogers Combat grips... <thank you Teezer for that info> copied/made out of Indian ebony.

I doubt S&W will refinish the gun, but you can always ask.

Great looking gun. I've got a Bill Davis slab side that he built for me from a Model 66 that I had won. It was my second Davis gun and my biggest mistake was ever getting rid of my first one. Nothing wrong with the second one; just two classics are ALWAYS better than one!!

M29.. I called S&W and asked already.... they said they would blue it for me, normal bluing only they said, no extra or darker finish but, it'll still look nice.

Teezer... Does Hogue make those grips in wood..or just rubber?

These ebony grips I am thinkin about buying...they have a bit of a palm swell..and will cut the top to better accommodate speed loaders.

they do make them in wood

wood= looks

rubber = performance

in PPC shooting you don't want smooth grips

Yeah, I would get the grips checkered.... like my plastic Roger Combat grips. Would you still prefer rubber over those plastic roger combats?

Do you have pictures?

Those rosewood grips won't be correct for that gun. Keep the Rogers that are on it or find some Davis grips like CALREB has- nothing says PPC like either of those grips. Those guns were meant to be tools, not wall-hangers. They don't need fancy grips. You look at PPC guns and you'll start noticing stuff crudely engraved on them, grips modified all kinds of ways, numbers spray-paint stenciled on them, etc. The name of the game was function before beauty. I agree with others who say don't change anything on the one you have because they don't make them like that anymore. Find a different M10 to build your dream race gun around if that's what you want.

You want a light grip. Put a big heavy wood grip on the gun and now you negated the purpose of the weighted barrel.

The grips shown above are actually Indian ebony, not rosewood, if that matters.

Thank you for the advice...I hadn't realized that the heavier wood grip would negate the extra weight put on the front of the gun. I am just a casual shooter and I have never shot a PPC before this, nor do I know that much about them really... I am kinda just learning and a little new to these guns, it's all new un-explored territory for me.

Another question for all you guys... what are the best speed loaders to use for this gun? Up to now with my other Smith's and my Ruger's I have used only HKS.. <hey they're cheap> any suggestions?

As someone who got back into PPC after a 30+ year absence, I can assure you the HKS will not hold a candle to the Safariland speedloaders available now.

I agree entirely. The Safariland speedloaders are far superior.

My Davis gun was built from a M67. I used it for years and was at the top of my class. I slimmed down and shortened the factory wood grips and glassed them to the frame. Rubber grips never held tight enough to the frame and caused points to be dropped. Wood allows a good grip and a better fit. I amde several pairs of them and switched them among several revolvers. They are currently riding on an N frame I carry.

Not sure where you want your 686 to go or why it should cost that much. I had two of them I used in PPC distinguished. Eventually, they replaced my Davis revolver and the scores did not change. All it took was a grip change.

Oh, I what I "want" and what is realistic are two different things is all. I want to add a new barrel...cylinder.. under-lug and sight rib to my 686, unfort. the cost of sending it to a smith for that is just far too unreasonable.

Here's my Powers Custom. Built back in 1979 on a 13-1 frame (however, only shot with .38 special wad-cutters). Ron use to work in his basement when he lived in Independence, MO.

I paid $380 for the entire package, 6" Douglas bbl., Bomar sites and it included a very nice set of smooth Hague wood grips. De-horned hammer for DAO with a smooth as a hot knife in butter pull. The grips I determined were too nice to be getting on the ground (concrete) for prone shooting at the 50 yard line, so I tried many different types till I settled on these Pachmayr grips. Each charge hole is numbered, chamfered and internal guts were Ron's design. All screws were replaced by Allen head screws (made for a cleaner look I thought).

Haven't shoot it in a while (about 20 years!), but it's mine and will go with me to the grave!

I was fortunate enough to become the guardian of Fred Schmidt's Demo PPC gun after his passing. It had one of his patented short cylinder conversions done, bull barrel with underlug, Aristocrat rib with 3 position front sight, cranelock balls (locked open and closed) and every other advantage that could be built in legally. I enjoyed it for several years shooting in a casual PPC "league" at the indoor range in Roanoke, VA. Eventually my interests changed and the "Schmidt Gun" went to a collector and I settled back to shooting my Model 66 with a 6" barrel, but I still miss that heavy barreled monster all these years later. On a related subject, I used to have another gun Fred built, a Model 10 HB with a "Coverup Rib." That was actually the most practical PPC gun that could still be carried. I really wish I had kept that one!

I bought a Mint M65 Davis modified similar to your 10 from a helpful member last month. It is very smooth. I also have a pair of smoothed 6" L Frames, M10 Bull, and M14 factory barrel with Bomar rib. They are all very nice. Main difference is weight balance.

Can I know the full specs of the gun? It looks awesome and fits everything I want in a revolver.

May I know what the original gun is to the custom parts in detail?
