I don't believe that price reflects any sense of reality.

zelda, I bought a 6" (28) no dash in Dec. on GB for $450. 95% or so. Just think what I could with the other $1,000! I did not get a box (boo hoo) I lucked out, as it is clean, accurate and fun to shoot. Bob

I can remember when Model 28's were common, and relatively inexpensive.
People were trading them in on Model 29-2's.
I traded in my 1977 Belgian made Browning High Power, to buy my first Model 29-2.
I sure wish I would have bought one of those Model 28's, AND one of the Colt Python's, that everybody seemed to have in relative abundance, back then.

I remember when the M-28's were looked down on as the blue collar revolver, for those who could not find or afford an M-19. If we only had a crystal ball then.

I think the 28 is one of the most interesting looking revolvers made by S&W. From the two tone finish and the smooth topstrap, and smooth rear sight, just a great looking gun. I was lucky enough to find a 6" S# w/box, early part of last year and a 4" N#, that was a Christmas present to myself. Very unique revolvers. Would not sell either one.

It was in pretty decent condition with box and stuff. It's not as if it's getting easy to find anything like that these days. So maybe some young collector decided they had to have it.

I dont know what happened there, but it is definitely not indicative of current value. Wonder if the guy will actually get paid.

I have an earlier 28-2 (than the auction one) that is indeed NIB/ unfired. I could have saved the buyer $400

It doesn't bother me one way or the other. If someone has the money, and wants to spend it for something they really want, it's OK with me. I couldn't have done it, but I'm sure I've "overpaid" for others I've got.

Jack the Dog always gets top dollar, were I to sell my collection he'd be the guy I would use.
Btw, JTD is top notch, I've bought from him before.

NIB with all goodies always brings top dollar. Collectors have money and will spend it on the right gun.

Hi, Chuck. Actually there were 79 bids. Two of the bidders got into a war at around $760 and took turns from there on out.

That's a really nice 28,but I don't think I'd pay that for it,as much as I like them. A 28 was the only issued service gun I ever had. I had to provide all the others myself.
I really liked mine and killed a lot of rabbits with it with 38's. That's just too much for my poor wallet.

Watch and see if that one doesn't show back up.
It turned into the ego thing you see happen on GB....
Not even more money than brains thing, or he would have stuck in a high price and walked away...
Give me a break. It's a damn N serial 28. I have several. Anyone want to pay that money for them.
I think Jack smokes crack.

Look at this forum there are a lot of model 28 posts. Prices realized at auction have gone up since the first of the year. Just like gold why do people buy when it is ramping up rapidly then suffer during corrections. It is a sort of I better get one now while I can. N frames in general are up. J frames seem to be lagging a bit. When I picked up my HP in January by being patient and asking around I got a better gun for less.

I bought my first S&W, a 4 inch M29-2 in 1973 for $140.00.
Jack The Dog attains excellent prices because he has built a quality reputation on AuctionArms. And he always starts his auctions at a penny.
I too have dealt with him, a fine man.

That's a nice revolver but too rich for my blood. For that price I bought a 5 inch and a 6 inch Model 27 in excellent condition. I'm not knocking the seller I just think the buyer could have done better with his money. I say that because unless that model 28 was owned by someone really famous and had documentation to prove it then to me it's way to much money for it.

I'm thinking the buyer was drugged. My 4" 28-2 with a "S" serial number, and in the same condition as described in that auction, cost me $450. I've added a box, instructions, ammo flyer, and tools, and haven't spent $530 yet.
WOW!

I have had only 2 28's, one was converted to .45 Colt & .45 ACP in 1972,
The other to 38WCF/38-40 in 2007.
This one was $350 + $550 to convert....

28 's
I have dealt with this seller, Mark "Jack the Dog" a number of times.
He practically is Auction Arms!
I think most of his guns are consignments and he has some of the nicest stuff out there, week in and week out.
I don't buy often, at least for as much as I look, but sometimes if I want a nice example and he has it ...
He is as honest as they come, dealing with him is like buying from Lee,
you will get exactly what you expect, that is worth something, but in this case something is north of double, a bidding war is all this one is.
I will not be surprised if winner reneges, I am going to watch for it.

How times and prices have changed, I remember back in the late 70's nearly every dealer at the gunshows had a M/28 or two on their table. Could hardly give them away at $150.00. I have owned several over the years, they are excellent rugged workhorse revolvers. Something about their plain appearance that gives them an appeal all their own.

Yes, the 28, is kind of plain! That is where the right set of grips comes into play! I am not a good shooter, but my 6" 28 shoots anything but plain! My favorite revolver! Bob

There was a 28-2 4" that just sold on GunBroker within the last couple days for $1349, and earlier this month a 6" one went for $1400. So unfortunately (for buyers) this is not an isolated incident.
They were real nice with boxes and all the goodies, but those are some crazy prices.

THAT"S CRAZY!!
I even think that is too high for a 98% vintage M27, but I guess others think differently. Well, I guess that makes my M28 that much more valuable.

I picked on up, along with a Model 58, for $300 (no box). Again, as stated in other posts, some people have money and to them, the sky is the limit.

Actually, the gun joseywales2 is talking about. The one bought for $1349,was bought by my dad.But there was reasons behind the purchase.First off, it was a model 28 no dash unfired in the box.And the other reason was it was only 60 serial numbers away from a 99% 28 no dash six inch With original box he already had.He is a collector and not a shooter, so condition is everything to him.And he is not out to resale. So even though this price was super high there was a reason behind it.keith

My mistake there, sorry about that. I just remembered it was P&R, so I was thinking -2 probably as it's more common.
Anyway, usually when things get bid up that high it's like you say, a special serial number or it fits a hole in a collection. I don't begrudge people who spend that kind of money... it's their money and they can spend it how they like. I don't have a collection like that so it seems a little crazy to me, but I can understand from your fathers point of view why he "had to have it".

Crazy prices anymore, but that one is obscene. Heck, I gave my nephew a 4" model 27 couple years ago and figured it was worth maybe $500-600 in 95% condition. Something he can shoot and remember uncle "Big Chief" by.

This is a good reason why you shouldn't bid on things while smoking crack! Like a couple of the other posters here, I bought a 6" 28 in the mid 70's. It was 1975 and it was the first gun I purchased after getting my license to carry. I paid $135. The gun is still around as I gave it to a close friend about 20 years ago. He's carried it on his trap line and has killed all manner of game with it including a black bear. But I have to say, IMHO, that's way too much for a 28. Even as nice as it is.

Interesting... I'm wondering whether or not the winning bidder even expected it to go that high since all of his bids were proxy bids, most
likely submitted by one the bid sniping sites.
I know people sometimes put an outrageously high bid ceiling on their snipe, expecting that no one would go that high.
Was the other guy savvy enough to know that and decided to just mess with guy by bidding him up, or just wanted it in the worse kind of way?
Wow... things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
