Model 36 Manufacturing Date Request
hi all...also new to the forum... I am looking at a model 36, 3 inch round butt, unfired in box, trying to find a manufacturing date for ser# 6J3XXX...there is paperwork in the box from S&W dated 1971. On the paperwork is a warranty clause dated 11/15/1955. It almost appears as if someone obtained a S&W history in 1971. thanks for any help

it is from the "floating j" period. 1971-1972. yours is probably from '71. the 1955 date is for the actual printed message inside the box, and was used for decades.
welcome to the forum!

First off, welcome to the forum.
1971 is correct for the year your revolver should've shipped.
As to its being "p&r", yes, it ought to have a pinned barrel, but it shouldn't have recessed chambers.

The others have the ship year correct.
S & W always tracked guns by ship date, not production. Popular models left the factory quickly, so these were probably made not too long before shipping (like your model 36). Less popular ones have been documented as staying on their shelves for years, and sometimes decades.
