Yesterday at the local gunstore, I was able to trade a cherry 4" Mdl 19 on a NIB 6 and 1/2" Ruger Blackhawk Limited flattop in 44 mag. I only had to cough up $100 in addition to the Mdl. 19. Who says there you can't make deals out. I traded a delicate revolver that splts barrels at the throat and replacement barrels are unobtainable, for a sturdy revolver that will digest magnums all day long and not choke on them or shoot itself loose.

Um can you please post where you traded the model 19 so one of us can get it back.....LOL I personally amd not a Ruger fan, I would not have made that trade. But hey if you are happy that is all that matters. I have said it before and I will say it again,,,This threat is useless with out pictures.

This is my first Ruger centerfire revolver. I have one of their rimfire semi auto pistols, and am a fan of Mdl 77 rifles. I do know they make a sturdy firearm. As shooters, S&W Mdl 29s and 629s are overpriced in my opinion. I wanted a sturdy 44 mag pistol as a companion to my Marlin 1894 in 44 mag. I guess it all depends on if you want a working gun at a reasonable price, or do you want an expensive show piece. I don't plan on trading either of my L frame 581s. Now those are fine working guns.

I love S&Ws but I also like Rugers. I'm glad we have the choice to have both. I never owned a Ruger that was not a fine gun.

I like the idea of having a rifle and pistol in the same caliber. I bought a Taurus cowboy revolver and a Rossi 20" 1892 in .45 Colt. I found the Taurus spectacularly inaccurate.

I got a .44 mag Taurus as a gift. I didn't care for it either. Traded it for a 4 5/8" Ruger Blackhawk .45 Colt/ACP convertible. I love that gun. Then I bought a nickel S&W 25-15 Classic. I load that one medium to light for range shooting. S&W fever struck. I bought a 25-13 Mountain Gun, then a 25-7. It's nice to have the stouter Ruger to take out in the woods with the Rossi. I rarely shoot more than 10 rounds through each when working up a load or sighting in. The S&Ws regularly shoot hundreds of light to medium target loads.

I have Rugers in .357/9mm and .22 as well.

I've bought a few other S&Ws in the past couple of years. My 4" and 6" 19-3s are a joy to shoot. I don't beat them up with full bore .357

Wow, I would not have made that trade. Rugers are good revolvers and I have a Blackhawk 357/9mm. But I would not give up my model 19-2 4 inch and pay $100 for a Blackhawk. The only way I would make that trade is the gun shop would have to give me $150.

The K frame magnums are smaller/lighter than your Ruger, so I dont see how it's a valid comparison. Especially considering you went to a 44 magnum.

As far as value, I would have traded you all day if I had a Ruger. Those guns here I can pick up for 4-500$

Glad to know there's another S&W 19 on the market....you can have the Ruger.

Trade a very collectible Smith & Wesson for a Ruger that is being cranked out by the millions? I don't think so.

Many years ago I went through my Ruger single action phase. Owned damn near every one they made. Great guns. Built to last forever and can take whatever you put in them. But unless you had a problem with that particular gun you gave up a true 357 classic. I know the issues and like any tool if you use it for what it was designed it will outlast you and your children. I am glad you got what you wanted but like it has been stated they are still cranking out Rugers not so with the 19's. Enjoy that Ruger.

Glad you're happy with your trade. I would have kept the 19 though (as others have said, not made anymore). I know situations dictate otherwise for some, but I would've bought the ruger with cash/some other trade if possible, but not a cherry 4" combat magnum.

I'm in the I would have kept the 19 camp. But hey, it's your gun, enjoy it!

Let me make a wild guess:

You are rich and don't have kids, so you can take the luxury of lighting cigars with twenty dollar bills, mixing Rusty Nails with $150 Scotch, and making trade deals that amount to squandering your money!

As stated already, not exactly an "apples to apples" comparison, but hey, if you're happy with the trade then congrats. IMHO, I wouldn't have made that trade. I own a 19-4, and I have shot a Ruger Redhawk. The Ruger is a fine gun, but (in my hands at least) it ain't a 19.

Yes the 19 is great. But when I had mine I always worried about the next round being the one that split the forcing cone. If I wanted to shoot 38 loads I could do it out of my 15, or 52. I like Rugers enough to own ten of them. You can't break them and shooting loads that they are chambered in won't hurt. I say if you are happy with the trade ya dun good.

Giving out directions to the GS ? I've shot model 19's for 30 years,
Never had a problem with one yet. And i shoot .357 158gr. loads not .38 specials. If i want a cowboy gun i can get one on the cheap any day of the week. Not so with combat magnums. Bad trade, but hey it's your money.

I can't find the thread on here, but it was a recent model 19 thread, a gunsmith and S&W collector of 20-30 years said he come across exactly ONE cracked model 19. Just like every urban myth, it's overblown hype.

Harrison, your deal was not a trade I would have made, but bottom line it was your M-19 to do with as you wanted. I hope you enjoy your new Ruger.

Lots of Ruger hate on here! I love them both (and Colts!) but you do have to scratch your head at why S&W built so many revolvers that really aren't suited for the magnums (K frame 357's, N frame 44's). I realize they'll take some abuse, but I would love to have the durability of a Ruger with the fit/finish and trigger of a Smith!

I might have done that when I was 22 but I wouldn't do it now. I like my 19-5. It's been with me for 20 years and likely will be for another 20.

I carried 19s as duty weapons for years. The only thing "delicate" about them was me. Moderate care and they last for ever. I also shot magnums out of mine. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

Ruger.com, the model 19 is the finest full time 38 and part time 357 every made. If you wanted a 44 you got a good one,but at what price?

I do like Rugers, one of my favorite hunting rifles is a M77 in 308. Very accurate rifle, built tough. However, the only way I would have made that trade was if I was on the business end of a 19.

Well, Harrison, you gotta expect what you might call a dearth of empathy on an S&W collectors' forum about trading a fine out-of-print S&W for a Ruger. It is a good thing that we can have so many choices in the U.S, though. I've tried for 40 years to love Rugers and failed. I've probably owned as many of them as S&Ws, but the only Ruger I've got now is a 25 YO 10-22 with a Leupold 2-7X Rimfire on it. Ain't nuthin' like a good S&W, and IMO the 19 sorta walks on water.

Money wise it does not sound like you got the good end of the deal. That being said, I've had some guns that just didn't suit me or my needs, so I sold or traded them off to buy guns, etc., that were I preferred. You obviously were not happy with the Model 19. That is fine. Everyone has their own opinion. If you bought it with the idea of using it to fire heavy magnum loads routinely, then you were uninformed. Had you chosen a L or N frame, you would have been very much well served. Look on this as a learning experience. As to durability, any firearm is just a mechanical device. They all wear. Sooner or later, they all require some attention. With reasonable care you will enjoy many years of enjoyment shooting the Ruger. Failing such care, your Ruger SA will have to make a trip to the gunsmith. It's not the end of the world. Have fun!

Uh, you said you made the trade for a FLAT TOP Black Hawk .44? If that's what I think it is, all trash talking aside, you did quite well-even on a financial basis. Last I checked, flat tops, in good shape, were drawing substantially more than model 19s.

The bottom line is that you could've traded your Model 19 for a Co2 pellet gun, and if both people are happy with the trade, it was a good trade.
That's the deciding factor - both parties are happy. Monetary values mean little compared to your happiness with the deal.

I think he meant one of the new "Limited" edition flat tops, not an original from the 50's. I would not have made the trade but enjoyed shooting my 5 1/2" Super BlackHawk just yesterday. Can't we all just get along? Disclaimer: I am a member off the Ruger Forum too.

It is not urban myth. I sent a couple of my K frame magnums in to S&W for some work, and everytime i did it, the gunsmith would emphatically tell me not to shoot .357 in a K frame, and if i insisted on it, to only shoot 158 grain and do so sparingly. The K's were designed to be carried with .357's, but not shot as often with them. Bill Jordan even advised against shooting many .357 in them. Now some people will say they have 20,000 .357 down the pipe, and others will say they split a forcing cone very early on. There have been several threads on here where members have told of splitting forcing cones.

If S&W was so sure of the k frame magnums, why'd they stop making them? They still churn out K frame .38's, so why not give shooters the choice?
