Default Model 29

Hi, hoping you can help. I tried a Model 29-3 , I think it had an 8 inch+ barrel. It was one of the best shooters I ever tried. I was able to hit the center of the bullseye with all 6 shots out at 10 yards. Very happy right now. My question is whats better to shoot for target practice an older Model 29 or newer Model 29 or one of the newer S&W revolvers? I really want a 44 Magnum with a long barrel. What should I be looking at besides a model 29. Thanks, Howard

Only issue is that if you plan on shooting 100s of maximum loads, such as in silhouette shooting, the newer Model 29s and 629s with the "endurance" package would be a better choice.
A good discussion of these issues here:
DOES ANYBODY KNOW THE STORY ON THE EARLY 629'S

N-Frame Smith .44 Magnums are great. I've got a 29-3 I bought new in 1987, and a 629-4 I bought last year. Both shoot great and are accurate. I am a hand-loader, so can make my rounds from mild to wild. Get the 29-3 you like and don't worry about it.
