Default I found a 629 (No Dash) What should I offer?

It has been a busy weekend at the gun show! I came across a pretty nice 629, pinned and recessed, 6". It is for sale, and he was asking $700. What do you all think?

It might go for that price. I'd offer $600, and see where it leads. If it has case, tools, etc., $700 would be a good price.

What's a new production one go for?
It's worth more than what ever that is, if condition is excellent.
I'm sure You know a4" would be more scarce.

I own four of them (2-4" and 2-6") and to me, they are "priceless." Just remember, if you love P&R guns, they are not made that way anymore. For a stainless 629 (collectable/shooter) I would not hesitate to buy it at that price.

If it's in very good condition that' a good price but I'd probably offer less and see where the deal went form there. The 4 inch and 8 3/8 inch versions are rarer and go for more but I would pay that for a clean 6 inch. I have the set of no dash 629's with includes a 4 inch, 6 inch, and an 8 3/8 inch barrel.

That's an average price unless it has wood presentation case or factory box. Here is mine, I got lucky and snagged it for $525

I just sold a shooter grade 629-1 to a fellow board member for $500 he and I were both happy (no box and a set of pach's). Hard to tell from your photos but that gun doesn't look to be shot much.

A four inch may bring a little more cash, but I think for one you intend to shoot, the six inch barrel is superior on a .44 Mag.

For a P&R stainless, $700 doesn't sound too high, assuming excellent cosmetic & mechanical condition. You would probably have to do a lot of looking to find one for much less. Keep in mind that an on-line purchase will entail FFL and shipping fees.

From what little I know, you are not getting the deal of the century but you are not getting robbed either. Your money, your choice.

A Pinned and Recessed 629 No Dash is “worth” more to me than a new production 629. I think there is usually more “Value/Worth” in an older S&W, believing them to be of higher quality.

It’s your business if you want to pay more for a new production gun that “costs” more, but is “worth” less.

My point is that, you can buy a brand new 4" 629 for around $1,000, maybe slightly less, but not much. This is for a bare bones model with hogues and no non-standard options.

You can find quite a few 629 no dash's in 98% condition for less than that. Maybe without box and papers, but none the less. That is what I was getting at.

I dont fool with the term "worth", because as is pointed out, people pay stupid amounts of money for their "grail gun" if they find one. Like the Model 28 which went for over $2500 recently or the model 60 that went for $4000. "Worth" is a very personal and objective term that really has no place in the free market of buying and selling guns. Because heaven forbid what you are looking for at the moment is also somebody's "flavor of the month", they will pay whatever their credit limit is for it, and that has nothing to do with it's normal value in the market.

The point is, right now, the market is valuing a 629 no dash considerably less than a new one. Based on average used prices of guns SOLD on gun broker.

"Worth", that's for you to decide.

If I was gonna shoot one a lot, I would get a 629-4 rather than a no dash, and this is coming from the owner of a no dash, which I really like!

To the OP's question, despite the deal I got, I think $700 is an acceptable price.

Originally, the 629 no dash would have included the wooden presentation box and target grips. While it does not have the endurance package, it should still handle full powder loads quite nicely. I have had mine since they were first introduced and it still shoots very accurately.

Although I own the full set of three 629 no dash guns and two of the current production 629-6's, there is no comparing them for value.

The current 629's will depreciate instantly after being shot. The no-dash P&R 629's will see a continuing escalation in value every year.

I completely agree with Crofoot629's value assessment that for a collector or person who is simply interested in protecting their investment, any nice no-dash, for the same money, is a much, much better investment.

They aren't making any 629 no-dash guns and certainly not those that are P&R. Contrary to what you may read on sites like this, jamesr14, you may not have many more opportunities to buy a gun like you're looking at... If you left the show without it it's likely someone else owns it for that price....

Just sayin'
