There were a few 5" Florida Highway Patrol guns, and a very few in known SN ranges.

This should say "Never pay a premium without a letter from S&W"
If you can buy it at a shooter price, and you like it, it does not matter if it is factory or after market finish

There are approximately fifty known Model 28-2s with a brushed nickel finish and 4-inch barrel that were shipped to several distributors in 1972. The serial number range is approximately S287000 to N59000.
I would only buy this revolver if accompanied by a factory letter authenticating its finish, or with an agreement it can be returned if it does not letter.
The photo below shows one of the original Model 28-2s with a brushed nickel finish.

Bill,
What do you think the value is on an authentic one like yours?

I have a model 28 that I am going to have to have refinished at some point because it's honestly a mess.
I had considered chroming and some of the other products like parkerizing, metalife, cerakote, etc but for the most part they I dont like the looks of them. Chroming is the closest I can see to factory nickel. The so-called "electroless nickel" looks awful to me on a revolver. I guess on an auto it looks ok, but i'm not into the "I took a can of silver spraypaint and "refinished" my gun" look that some of these give off.
How many of you have actually gone through this process, were you pleased and how much did it cost you?

Dennis...I saw one for sale in Tulsa at $4,000 plus. It was near NIB with the accessories and paperwork. I suppose this is the going rate if you can find one.

Doc, I'm surprised one could be had for that low amount, I would think much more.
Your picture is on my desktop as my one and only grail gun.

Dan, yours definitely falls outside the known range of brushed nickel 28s. I would bet it's been hard chromed.

Saw one at gunshow today. It looked right, BUT no N marked on cyl or frame.
Were the original ones marked with the N?
Serial # on this one is N113xxx, which i see is out of the known range.
thanks

I just now saw this thread and your post with the accompanying photograph. This is absolutely the very first time I've seen a 28 like this, and really the first time I knew they even existed. What a beautiful revolver...what a beautiful factory finish on a real workhorse gun. And I guess the red insert on the front sight is factory, too? And if you saw one for $4K two years ago, I wonder what one would be worth now?
Beautiful photograph, too. Love how the slot on the sight adjustment screw is vertically aligned with the sight blade! That's what I call attention to detail in photography.

Dead give away is that most of the time, the refinisher will also hard chrome the hammer and trigger, rear sight or ejector star, or all of the above.

With only 50 produced, and at least some in collector's hands, I would never in a million years believe any nickel 28 I came across to be original. I have seen dozens of nickel 28s, and most were offered by sellers who swore they were factory original. Not one had the letter with the gun. Anyone who had a real nickel 28 would have the letter.

Doc,
That is a beauty. I have a model 28 that I am thinking about getting refinished, and I might have it done in brushed nickel, or hard chrome. That is gorgeous.
