best product for refinishing wood grips
As noted in another thread, I may be sanding a spot on my wood S&W Target grips so that they line up perfectly. After doing this, what product do you recommend for refinishing them? I want to do the anyway because their is a resin substance in the checkering that I want to clean out also. I was thinking of a soft wire brush to get this out.

+1 to the BLO, and remember, acetone is your friend, makes quick work of removing old varnish and lacquer.

What he said! I have used Birchwood Casey Tru Oil since the early 70's. I used to refinish shotgun & rifle stocks for people. I liked doing it, and they were happy! They paid me too! Just used on Herrett target K Frame grips about a month ago. Works, so why change? Good luck! Bob

Another vote for Tru-Oil. Rub on with your finger and work in with the heel of your hand. Let dry, the re-apply. Apply 4 to 5 coats, then after letting it dry/harden for 6-7 days rub out with a solution of Rottenstone and mineral oil made up to a paste. Will give you a smooth luster without a high gloss.

+1 for Tru-oil, cover the checkering with painters tape until the final applications, to prevent excess build up. You can make the finish glossy or satin your choice. I went with glossy.

Acetone as finish remover and for a great not so shiny finish I use Formby's Low Gloss Tung Oil. Good stuff and cures faster than Tru-Oil.
There are four coats of low gloss tung oil on these Herrett's gracing a 1954 Colt Official Police .22

i've used formby's high gloss tung oil for several grip re-dos, and have been very satisfied. start off by sanding away the old finish with 0000 steel wool. clean grips well before oiling. i use air pressure and clean rags. then apply a coat of the tung oil-let dry (usually overnight),lightly sand with 0000 steel wool, clean and apply another coat of tung oil. do this process for about 4 coats, and you'll love the results!
