Default Model 15 Mania

Without a doubt, the finest in K frame adjustable sighted .38 Special revolvers.

Many of us who carried them on the job or in the military(which was my expirence) depended on them.

Who knows how many were manufactured over the years. Great examples still exist out there along with a large amount ANIB 15's...

I own a 15-2 only fired 6 times, and 2 15-3's

Bring 'em out !

1964 15-2

1976 15-3

1974 15-3 Sunday Go To Meetin Gun

Purty too !

Maybe I'm biased a bit, but the 15 is just soooo sweet in your hand.

Agreed and in bad weather you can take your model 67 for a walk. Same thing only better.

This one went to the campus P.D. of a LA university.

Do pre-model versions count?

We can't ignore the Father of the 15's, the K-38. They are more than welcome here..

Don't know about you Bill, but everytime I handle one of mine lots of memories come back.

That is an outstanding picture. I wouldn't mind printing and framing that as art.

Here is my 15-2 USAF gun that shipped to Robins Air Base, GA on February 26, 1965. A bit off topic but another AF gun photo, an Aircrewman that also shipped to Robins on July 25, 1957.

I have a 15-4. Used a bit, but so am I. I was very happy the day I came across this gun at a LGS. I also carried one of these in the military. I started with it when we were still called Air Police. Then the USAF changed it to Security Police. A more accurate title, but not as cool sounding. I really enjoy shooting this gun again. They really are classic.

Here is my 15-3 from 1975. It was part of my initiation into S&W wheel guns (along with a 686 bought at the same time). It is an excellent shooter, but I don't shoot it near enough. Mmmm, I wonder what I might do tomorrow? My apologies for the bad cell-phone pics.

Saxon pig you have my holy grail gun from 1951 my birth year. Any chance you could be my long lost father who could do an intra family gun transfer for out of state? Guess not the quest continues from behind the wall in Caifornia.

Just posted a range report on an ol' 15-3 I picked up a couple weeks ago.
It shot better than I really expected.
The finish has seen better days, but I got rid of all the light rust and de-grimed and de-greased the grips, putting on a couple of thinned coats of polyurethane.

Think I'll keep this one.

More Model 15's in action:

Security Police Emergency Response Team works a hostage rescue drill at Camp Bullis, Tx.

Note the SP far right with the folding stock 870 and on the far left, a CAR-15. The predecessor to the M4.

In the late 1970's our tactics and training were undergoing growth at a very rapid pace. More and more of us realized the need to be able to respond just as the civilian agencies did to a given situation.

Great photo, nut notice the helmets. The PASGT kevlar helmets began issue in the early 80's.

Any idea of when this photo was taken?

ok , I got sucked in to this whole wheel gun thing about two weeks ago when I purchased a 15-2 at the local Cabela's, I was about to settle on a 10-3 they had but I wanted something with adj. sights and when I saw the 15-2 I could not believe it , after many hours of internet reasearch I figured this would be a good choice for my first revolver , so Plopped down $ 275 washingtons & a $25.00
Cabela's gift card and took home a really nice 38 with the usual holster wear , took it to a local S&W guru who told me locks up like a drum good timing and good bore, after a little further research found manufac date 1962 with T.P.D stamped on frame under grips (stocks)
being here in AZ probably Tuscon police dept.I was told I could have only done better if I had stolen it or inherited it , so off to the AZ desert for a test drive,WOW let me say that again Wow now I get this whole wheel gun thing !!! what a blast !! 50 rounds of158 grain S&B l.r.n & shoots better than any of my semi auto's (except for maybe my buckmark) as usual I did it backwards should have started with the wheel guns !!!! (live & learn)
I now think that S&W stands for Someday Wanna or Someday Willhave Im already looking for a 22lr S&W revolver, I don't think I will get as lucky on the $$$ as I did on the 15-2. (been told that must have been a mistake) but I will try to be patient & see what happens I"M HOOKED
may have to sell a couple of the semi auto's to get some more classic blue steel !!!

About four years ago, I was looking for a Model 10 at the gun show. I had seen some cheap at the previous months show.
I didn't find a cheap Model 10, but I found this Model 15-3... For $175.
Before the wood grip only chorus kicks in, I usually have PC magnas and a Tgrip...I use the Uncle Mike boot grips when I carry IWB.
I just can't seem to miss with this revolver.

Default The Model 15-TV and Movie Star

Although the most famous (in some folks opinion) Smith is the Model 29, the Model 15 has had it's day in limelight too!

From Adam 12 to Jaws and Die Hard, where Sgt Al Powell (Reginald Vel Johnson) uses his Model 15 to stop the last bad guy in the end of the movie.

These are the overlooked Smith, the one that did it's duty every day. All of you proud Model 15 owners have my appreciation for posting on this thread.

Many beautiful 15's and K-38's have been posted here. From safe queens to the every day shooters. Keep them coming.

More Model 15's in action.

I found and bought my first 15 earlier this year. It was a 1969 produced 15-3 w/ original magna grips numbered to the gun. The fit and finish is simply remarkable. The SA and DA trigger pulls are what made S&W famous. With the magna grips stored for safe keeping and replaced with some nice S&W target grips, this 15-3 handles like an absolute dream. With no sight adjustments firing WWB 130 gr. FMJ's it shot POI to POA at 15 yds. Out to 25 yds., it is easy to keep all rounds in the center of my personal nemesis... the B-27. At night it is loaded and immediately available to my wife for those times when I must be away from the parsonage. She is very effective with it out to 15 yds.

I've only got the one, a Combat Masterpiece from 1951 (S118XXX).

Guys, nice 15 pics and info! I don't have a 15, just a shiney 67 no dash from 1973. Good looker and shooter. If the right deal presented itself, would have a 15 as well! Enjoy your 15's! Bob

Nice 15s everyone! I learned to shoot revolvers with the M15 in the USAF. Here's my 15-4 with my old SP beret. The ones we carried in the AF were a lot more "used" than this civilian model, I picked up several years ago. I'd love to come across an original USAF marked one now....

Kbm6893: They have tapered barrels unlike the 19's heavy barrel.

They don't seem to be tapered. The 19 and 66 barrels don't have the bull barrels like the fixed sighted K frames. I've owned a few 66's and a 19, and the bull barrel on my 65, 10, and 64 were much thicker.

kbm6893; Look at the barrel, in the pics on this thread, just ahead of the frame. It's thicker at the frame and tapers down to a smaller diameter about an inch or so ahead of the frame. The 19s, etc have a straight barrel which has a similar diameter from the frame to the tip. The beautiful pic of the business end of that nickel M15 in post #50 shows this pretty well.

I guess, but it's nowhere near as tapered as the pencil barrel model 10's. The model 10 bull barrel is much beefier than a standard 19 barrel.

Here is one more, kinda sad. It is a 15-2 that was brought back from Vietnam. It had been in the hands of an NVA soldier until he no longer had any use for it.
right side

left side

scrubed markings?
