Finally ... member of the model 18 club
I never dared to hope to find a good model 18, and thought I would end up some day finding a decent used 17 6inch (I already have a 617 6inch 6shot no dash). I went to my usual gunshop and couldn't believe what I saw : a used 18-4 for sale, today, on my birthday .
They were asking about 480 $ for it, no room for bargaining. It's used but not abused, some of the blueing is gone at the usual spots, but it's mechanically perfect in any way you might dream. I figured, this revolver will still be there when the money is long gone, so a second later I said : I'll take it.
It's serial number is 34K6xxx, so would some one be able to confirm my guess it's made end of the seventies ? It's a pinned barrel, and has the smaller grips (magna ?), but that's ok for a .22. I have no pictures yet.
Thanks for your replies, and pictures of yours.
A happy B686

Happy birthday and congratulations! You'll love it.
That's a good price, too.
A 22 CM ('51 I think) is my favorite revolver.

What Cooter Brown said ^^^^^^^ Good find and that is a good price around here. The last one I saw was priced a little North of $600 and it was only about 65-70% at most. Keep shootin' & check 6

Congratulations on your first Model 18 .
The early 18-4 was pinned with a large right side trademark while later ones are unpinned with a small left side trademark.
Here is a Model 18 (L) next to a 4" 17-5 (middle) and a 17-6 (R).

A Mod 18 is a great S&W 22LR to have. It make a great range/practice gun and a great small game/survival gun.
In todays world of high priced ammo and ammo being hard to get, having a quality 22LR, and a LOT of ammo is well worth the money IMHO...

I finally could bring my new (used) model 18-4 home today. I took it immediately to the range, and this is definitely one of the best .22 handguns I shot. It's worth ten times each cent it costed, and it looks so solid it will probably last a few centuries
I do like the looks of the grips, but I think I will change them to a set of targets I have, which I prefer for range use (and put these ones safely away, of course).
Engine49guy,
Your 18 family looks spendid,

That M18 is in great condition and you got a killer deal on it. Yes, thsi revolver will be with you long after the money is forgotten, but if you ever do need to turn it around it will bring in a lot more than $480, so it's all good.

OK, a quick pic of one of my Model 18's. Bought this one a few years ago with the dark Target grips. Probably not original and the grips are probably refinished but, they look very nice to me. I bought this one for less than $300.00 back then. Ahhh, the old days !
