Default Model 10 serial # D648336

I just bought an ANIB Model 10 serial # D648336. It was described as a 10-5 circa 1962 but this serial number begins with"D" which my Standard Smith catalogue tells me began in 1967. Also 10-6 began later in 1962. Can you tell me what year my serial number is from. I don't see it in my Smith catagogue.

Mike

Your serial number is from 1974. 10-6 is specific to the Heavy Barrel variant, 10-5 is a standard barrel. 10-5 and 10-6 were manufactured concurrently until 1977 when the 10-5 became 10-7 with the gas ring change, and 1978 when the Heavy barrel became the 10-8 with the same change. The 1962 date the seller gave is simply an error by him. If the stocke are original they would have been "Diamonds" in 1962.

Assuming the next "dash" change superceeds the immediately preceding dash is a very common error.

Beautiful - thanks for the info. I'll post a pic when I take delivery. Nice that it has box and all original contents.
