Arrow Care To Tell Me Exactly What This Is?

Here's hoping I posted in the right section, but I'm not exactly sure what era this is from. My expertise doesn't carry over into the revolver world unfortunately, and I'm an Hk guy anyways.

Just looking to be informs of what model this is, about what year it's from, anything special about it, and even a guess at what it's value might be, etc..etc...

Thanks :P

Serial number, caliber?

It may be a rare CTG!

.38 with the serial of.... "C 13738"

It actually does say :38 S.&W. Special CTG." on the barrel.

Looks like it might be a pre model 10 from the mid 1950's. Nice holster, does it have a name on it anywhere?

I think it is a .38 Military&Police, sometimes called a Pre model 10. If it is chambered in .38 Special, and if the grips are original, I think it would date to 1946-1952. I think the sharp shouldered Magna grips were used from 1946-1952, and the round blade front sight was changed to a ramp in 1952. It should have a sideplate screw in the hammer area, and a screw in front of the trigger guard, making this a 5 screw. Serial number should be C1-C224000, with the lower numbers toward 1948, and the uppers toward 1952. It could also have a serial number starting with an S, making it 1946-1948.
Although I could be totally wrong, it is one of the things I am best at.

C176XXX shipped September 1951.

Yours is probably late 1950 to early 1951.

Just pullin' your leg. The CTG stands for "cartridge".

It's a bit of a running joke around here . . .

To everyone else, I appreciate the help on gaining a little knowledge about this revolver. I hate having a firearm in my possession and knowing almost nothing about it. Nice to find out it is indeed a little older than what I guessed.

Not that I'll be selling it, but around what number are these usually worth?

Welcome, Street Wolf

Don't forget about the holster. We have one of the premier holster experts in the country as a member here. Please contact member turnerriver to find out who made it and what it's worth before you just go off and sell it without some background info. I'm not the expert, but that holster may be worth a good bit of money

Enjoy your time here. It's a great place with great people.

It is a .38 M&P postwar. As others have stated, in 1957 it was assigned model number 10. I have C 2077 that shipped in 11/48, C 46336 that shipped in 1/49 and C 84786 that shipped in 8/49. Not sure if yours is C 13738 or C 137388 as the thread has it listed both ways. Assuming that it is C 13738, I would make a WAG that it dates to 12/48.

The .38 M&P was the most widely produced revolver in the S&W line with several million made and therefore there are a bunch out there for sale. Yours appears to be in fairly good shape from the photos but only a hands on exam will tell exact condition. I would think that the gun is probably a $400 tp $500 gun and with the holster you could probably get another $100.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Malysh, and good idea. I'll give turnerriver a PM in a little while after I get some better pictures of the holster. I appreciate the help.

Thanks JSR, extremely helpful. It is in surprisingly good shape. I don't imagine it ever saw much use, or was even removed from the home more than once or twice. I appreciate your help.

Appears to have a 5 inch barrel which many people in law enforcement prefered. For that date, cira 1948 it would have shipped in a gold colored box. Nice revolver and holster set.

You can only do that if you are going to be on the cover of their glossy catalog.
