Default Still some good deals left - Model 58

I first became aware of this gun for sale while visiting another forum. The person was asking questions concerning model 58's and mentioned that he was looking at one in a LGS. Noticing I lived close to the person, I PMed the gentleman and asked him if he decided to not purchase the gun if he would share with me the LGS that had the pistol. He decided he had to many irons in the fire at this time to get it and sent me the LGS's name and phone number.... I made arrangements to go purchase the gun a few days later (took off work and drove the 1.5 hours up to get it). Needless to say I have thanked the person profusely...

I had always wanted a 58 to shoot and I am very pleased with my purchase. I did put some grips that I had on the gun since the once that came on the gun were non-S&W replacements that I did not like... The gun locks up tight and even though it has a cylinder ring does not appear to have been fired much.... I guess just either dry fired a bit for pratice or just played with...

BTW... $400 out the door.....

As you can tell, I am no photographer.....

Great deal on a very nice gun. My son has a model 58 that I get to shoot now and again. They are really a lot of fun. Too bad the early Police loads were too hot. The 58 really is the perfect police revolver.

When I hear of these "deals". I wonder several things. Is the poster crowing(lower than reality) a bit about the actual price paid. Are there really gun shops that are so out of touch with the market that they sell at 30-40% lower than the actual market value? In the computer age even. But of course he is always a"really nice guy" That would be the height of any understatement in this case. You could substitute old and possibly senile for "nice guy" as well. Great "score" you owe this store owner BIG time. As in wash his feet, take him out to a prime rib dinner and mow his lawn for several years etc.etc.

Very nice and awesome price to boot! A 58 is going to be my next smith. I would have probably already purchased one but a LGS had a 547 I couldn't walk away from.

Nice Deal! You got it for about 2/3's of what it's "worth" in the open market.

Say what you will.... He priced it, I did not.... To come on here and insinuate that I am fibbing takes a lot of nerve.... Go to 24hourcampfire.com and look under the handgun section.... read the original thread.... I am Sako on that forum... He let me have it OTD because I also bought a 17-3 from him... also for $400 put the door but the 17 had some wear on it....

Yes, i came on here to tell others but not as you suggested... I had two reasons.... 1. to share my excitment for finding a gun i have been looking for for several years at a good price and 2. to encourage others to keep looking..... because you still can find deals....

FWIW... the LGS owner does not even have email.... the LGS was a converted mobile home.... He also is in the county in TN with the highest unemployement.... lots of people selling stuff to make ends meet.... The shop literally had 50 or so muzzleloaders priced between 40 to 75 dollars... (all used of course)

I certainly hope you are not a reflection of the people on this board.... if so, I will certainly learn not to post here.

Wow, good snag! The 58 is on my short list. Yes you can get some good deals out there. For example one of our big gun shops (someone there shoud have knowed better) had a M-1905 4th target in pristine (like new) shape tagged as a K-38 for about one half what it was worth, needless to say it wound up in my safe that same day. So good for you and keep looking, ya never know what may turn up.

If you look at the responses to your post, you'll see they are all positive except for possibly one. That's a pretty good average. Don't let one post get you down. It is not representative of the forum. Nice revolver, by the way.

The truth is, yes, there are good deals out there, and from people who are well educated and fully plugged in to the interwebs. I posted in the lounge about a recent series of trades I made that allowed me to get a highly desireable Colt for what amounts to the investment of a bit more than 5 bills. The owner of the shop was on the web the whole time we were dealing checking out the prices.

Keep looking Ischia, you'll find a good deal someday

And great deal on the 58! The last one I saw was a refinished one the dealer wanted 600 for.

I think you're in to it for about half the market around here. With original grips, it would bring $900 easy.

Congrats. Enjoy the deal and enjoy the 58

10-shooter:

Do not be offended by comments here. People here believe you but remember, being new to the forum and market, it is rare to get such a great gun at a great price.

Just a short while back, a "friend-of-a-friend" wanted to part with two revolvers that were owned by someone who died years ago. I said I would look at them. When I did, I saw a Model 58 and a Model 28 that had been shot (bores were dirty) but were in "mint" condition otherwise. Despite my actually telling this friend he could list them on Gunbroker or other auction sites and get more money, all he wanted was $600 for both.

I now own them, and I am keeping them.

Honesty + right time, right place.....that's all it is.

Congratulations.

That's a great deal. I paid just a little bit more for my 58 but it's not as nice. As far as N-frame prices go, I find the best deals at local shops. The prices on Gunbroker.com are, in my opinion, substantially higher than what actual selling prices are on the ground. It also matters what kind of inventory the store generally carries. Some of the best deals I've gotten on S&W's have been at stores specializing in "tactical" type gear. To them, an N-frame is just "an old revolver" they took in on a trade and that is taking up space in the display case; they're happy to sell it so they can have more room for gen-4 Glocks.

When I reload...I load my 44 special with 7.5 gr Unique & 240 lead swc, then I switch to 41 mag for 215 lead swc. I leave the powder measure set up as is. Makes a very comfortable shooting load/gun. I was nearly ready to get rid of my 57 & 657; but, my 58 has kept me from ketting rid of everything .41...

Oregon45 nailed it (for alot of places). I've seen it in my area - if it doesn't have a rail on it, uses no hi-cap mags, not seen in any of the SWAT articles, and hasn't made the scene in Iraq/Afghanistan, then it's a relic and just taking up space.
I have benefitted before from this 'market anomaly'.

Glad for the OP - you did great.
BTW - let me crow, over the last year, I've gotten a M15 and a M28 4" for $180 and $300. Both great guns at pretty good prices.

Relax. No offense was intended towards you yourself. I believe I stated that I only "wondered". If that's offensive, sorry to have posted such a sensitive comment on this forum. I thought lively banter was permitted as long as no offf color language was included. But as I stated and you confirmed the seller WAS out of touch(no internet, converted trailer) with the real world and the market value. I suppose there are still such deals out there, even in the computer age. Reminds me of the old tales of a big block '67 Corvette in a barn, of course there was always the "odor" of a body that was found in it, for $500. Again, sorry to have offended. I was just trying to keep it lively, something other than only "Very Nice" or "Great Score"

Very good find....and a great price!

The man that owns the gun store set the price, and after all, he is a professional

Now you can join the club....the model 58's are an addiction. My two are not going anywhere any time soon....well, maybe to the range

Great find, let us know how she shoots.

I used to think that same thing, but after a few similar deals kind of fell into my lap recently, I have come to the realization that gun collecting is all about "right place, right time", and patience.

As far as the "computer age" comment. Some FFL's just refuse to deal with gunbroker and sell stuff online. I cant blame them.

Some gun stores and pawn shops model themselves as catering to the "bleeding edge" or market trends. Which, currently is polymer autos and "black guns" (AR's, Saiga's, etc) and to a lesser degree, the 1911 clone market. Some of these places are run more on testosterone than solid business sense, they see revolvers and all non-1911 autos made of metal as dinosaurs and dont want anything to do with them. And while they may take a model 58 for (partial) trade in on a shiny new plastic Glock 23 or SR9 or XDm or what have you JUST TO MAKE THE SALE. They can get their idea of value from the 10 year old copy of the blue book they have sitting under the counter.

They are then happy to sell the model 58 to "the old guy who comes in once every couple weeks looking for revolvers" for whatever the blue book says. Just to get it out of his case and off his books.

You would be surprised how much this happens in the industry.

Unfortunately, FFL's are becoming more educated on the subject and "meathead" FFL's who practice the business processes I previously mentioned are going out of business more and more.
