3" magnums are getting real hard to find. If it's mint -- I can see sellers asking for $525 to $575 and getting it.
I paid $400 for an OK condition cop trade-in last Summer. It cleaned up real well and I'm happy with it.

If it's that nice then $500 OTD isn't out of line.

Yep $500 plus seems to be in the realm now for these. Mine cost $475 at a LGS, with box and soft case. It needed a lot of TLC, however.
Still, I'm pleased with the gun:

I think $500 is a tad low for a "mint" 65 w/ 3" barrel, even without the box.

The last M65 3", no box or papers, that I picked up was from an individual for $420, which included an almost full box of .357! When I told him he should have been shooting .38s for practice, he had an ah-ha moment but let me have it for the agreed upon price. I paid $597, out the door for an LE trade-in with original box and papers from one of our LGS.

if it is a model 65-3 or higher...$500 is an OK price. but, if it is a 65-1 or 65-2 (pinned and recessed) better jump on it HARD & FAST!

I just put this one on layaway at my local gun shop, it was priced $385 with no box/paperwork. S&W 65-2 with a 3" barrel...It's got the original owners (I'm guessing) name engraved on it which I wasn't too keen on. But when I pulled the trigger and noticed how smooth it was I told them I'll take it. Ser # ID678xx dates it to 79-80 I believe.

You did OK on the price. The gun looks like new. I just picked up this 65-3 for $450 OTD.

CIsland, you missed this one!
The right thing usually comes, but not when we want it! There are good deals on many good guns. Be ready to pounce on them. I bought my nice 65-3 last year for $371 on GB. The current owner made it better yet! I wouldn't turn down another at the right price. Good luck on your hunt! Bob

Gunsamerica has one for $450, but once you pay for the shipping and FFL fees it would be over $500.
Congrats on your new revolver.

I bought one (65-3 RB 3") last month from Southern Ohio Guns for $390.00 to my FFL. It has a couple of small piting spots near the grips. It was a police turn in. It looks like it was not shot much but carried alot, it did not have much love so I polished it with Mothers. Much better now, put some Uncle Mikes rubber grips on it. I just bought a Safariland basket weave like new holster on Gunbroker for $27.00 deleivered. OH BOY!!

From the looks of your photo I would say you did extremely well. My M65 3" is my second favorite gun (M60-7 2" being first as it is my daily CCW) and is my go-to Woods Walking gun. IMHO it is the best all around CARRY .357 Magnum S&W EVER produced!

I would say you did very well. I found a 3" 65-3 about 5 years ago and paid $375 for it and it was well used (not abused). I carry mine quite often when off-duty. It has served me well.

The serial # is AEK84xx
Thanks in advance for any help you all can give me,

Without the proper grips, I would say $550.

I have a small track on the 3-in Model 65. Not enough for a trend but the average is probably reliable for the time period.
Smith & Wesson 65 3" Barrel Revolver in .357 Magnum,.38 Special, Plus P. Blue Book of Gun Values (33rd Edition) indicates between $300 in 95% condition and $400 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 8 recorded prices for this model gun from $435 to $668 over a period of 1 Yrs 9 Mos ending July 15, 2013. The average price as of that date was $555. No refurbs, no refinishes, regular sights. All represented as 95% or better. No distinction for import location or engineering revision, if any, no special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $563.
I found this one in November 2012.

FWIW
I picked up a 3" 65-3 last week for $360. It was a former police piece and didn't have any of the goodies and the grips were less than perfect.

Model 65-3
I'm new to this forum & fairly new to guns in general, but I recently picked up a model 65-3. It has a pearl handle which I haven't seen in any pics yet & I paid $500 for it. It's in excellent condition & has the S&W Logo on the barrel as well as a S&W medallion on the handle. Was just wondering if I got a good deal. I absolutely LOVE the gun & it seems like they tend to run around $500. I got it from a private collector & he didn't give me any papers. I'm thinking of getting the letters of authenticity, but wondering if it's worth the $50.00. I attached a picture of it. Please let me know what y'all think. Thanks y'all

You got a good deal at $500. I would not take that for mine. Save your $50, they are not rare, but because they are .357, 3", full ejection rod, good sight radius, very concealable they are in high demand and very hard to attain. Prices are going up. In my opinion it is the best concealed handgun Smith ever made.

$500 is a good price...... for LNIB........
I'd been looking for a 3" 65 for about 5 years around here. Finally found one last month ..65-5... asking price $495 at a small rural LGS. He is generally $50-100 lower (sometimes even more) than the Pittsburgh gun shops.
Deals are always out there..... but finding "the gun" you want "locally" can be a real issue.

Can a 65-4 be rebarrelled to a 3 inch. I picked up a 4 inch that has had extensive work done to it. Including porting. This thing is super slick. I just don't think I like ported.

Yes you can rebarrel your 4" to a 3" and there are a couple of ways to do it.
