1965 MODEL 29-2 with rare cokes
Well, I bought this 1965 29-2 and sent the grips off to DWFAN for a restoration. They came back this week and are absolutely stunning. See for yourself!
The grips are missing the relief for the ejector rod on the port side, what many of us commonly call "the football". We discussed this at length whe I bought the gun and here are the theories:
1. This is one of the original, historic prototypes to be used on the very first 44 magnums. Once it was established that the production cokes needed a football cutout, these grips went off to the side and resurfaced nine years later to be shipped on this gun. Perhaps there was a shortage at the time? 1965 was close to the end for cokes.
2. The cokes missed the football cutout step in production. This has occasionally happened.
3. DWFAN says these grips were used by a left-handed shooter. Perhaps the original owner was the southpaw and special ordered the grips sans the cutout? If so, he may have incorrectly assumed that the cutout was a thumbrest.

The stocks you have are only the second pair I have seen. I bought the only other pair in 1999.

I just love 6.5' 44 magnums anyhow. This one is my second. I was going to take it to the range in the morning and see how it feels to actuallly shoot an S-series gun with cokes. Doc 44's attestment to the rarity of the stocks caused me to pause. Only briefly though.

Those stocks should be on a very early 5 screw Pre-M29. Why don't you let me trade you a set of later cokes for those?

No no, Goodyears are what you want. I have both Hogues and Pachmayrs that I'll trade. They're very comfortable...

It was an honor to be chosen to bring some semblance to these historical stocks. I appreciate the clients confidence in me.

Interesting.
If I ran across a set of non-relieved Cokes for sale somewhere I'd have probably figured there was something screwy about the deal. Nice to know they really exist.

When I bought the gun, I only knew that the stocks were vintage. Up until then I had never really seen a set of cokes in person. I certainly did not immediately pick up on the missing relief cut, but then I presented my findings here on the forum.
Thanks to the expertise here, I have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the early 44 magnums. I even got a copy of Doc44s latest book.

Here is another rare set of stocks without the relieved area on the left panel and they date to 69-74.

I bought a pre-29 about 15 years ago that have the same grips as yours. The number stamped on the grips does not match the serial number of the gun. I'm at work so I can't check them right now. I figured someone switched the grips some time before I aquired the gun .... maybe from a 1950 Target. I've been meaning to post a question as to whether stocks were numbered with the guns on the early models.

Frankly, the grips now look much better up close and in person than your above photo led me to expect. Quality work indeed, and I am truly grateful.

I thought the N frames ( stocks ) were never numbered, but is that only for the MODEL NUMBERED guns, and not the earlier 44's? ( pre 29's)

Except for a very few exceptions, NT and KT stocks were not numbered to the revolver. Very early Combat Magnums had numbered stocks as did the Model of 1955 45 Target. Also, a few revolvers that had NT stocks special ordered were also numbered to the revolver.
