Recent Acquisition 60-1 3"
I recently was able to add a Model 60-1 to my 3" barrel S&W collection. I found this R series pinned barrel variation with box papers and tools, as well as serial matching grips on line and grabbed it. Serial R570XX. Allegedly, out of a group of 171 made in 1972, though I haven't verified that with a letter as yet. I had seen the later 60-1's with 3" that were made later in the newer triple alpha numeric serials but never an R series pinned version.

Very nice! One of my 1st purchases was a 3" 36. That was the first revolver i ever shot. My uncle worked at the NYPD range and the 36s were originally for women officers and when everyone went to 10s, Uncle John bought one they were mothballing. When we went to visit he'd take us to Red Hook and let us shoot it.

I've just got two words for your latest acquisition, Suh Wheet!
I have a 60-4 that is round butt with the under lug 3" bbl, but I would absolutely LEAP on one like yours to carry around day to day... it should point very naturally for me and the lesser weight would be a BIG plus. Congrats on a great find!

Wow. Never occurred to me that they made 60s in 3" before the -4. Very nice.

Similar one on gunbroker
There is a similar one on gunbroker right now that was a special made for John Jovino in NY by S&W. It is the later version that looks like mine except for the pinned barrel. It has a triple alpha numeric serial also. I have seen that version before but it too is uncommon.

I had one that I had to sell while out of work years ago. It was a bitter loss.a A neighbor who deserved a good gun bought it. Wasn't a collector's gun then, but I didn't realize how rare they are. Should have been a regular production item.
It was every bit as good as you'd think. I've also owned the blued version. Terrific guns. Worth having even if you own a M-60-4, which may be a better trail gun.
