Lucky Find NYSP 28-2
Can't believe I found this at my neighborhood gun store! New York State Police marked Model 28-2, 4 inch from 1980 in really fine condition. Almost no finish wear, scratches or signs of carry, though it has seen some range use.
The reason I say it is lucky? Because I have one of the Model 520's that the NYSP asked S&W to build, then canceled that order in favor of the adjustable sight 28-2. Pretty cool to have the revolver the NYSP was supposed to carry and also one the actually carried!
I had to pay nearly full retail- $515 out the door because another guy was also looking at it while I was there. The only reason I stopped in was to pick-up a rifle the store's gunsmith repaired for me. Ended up trading that rifle back to the store toward the 28-2. Also glad someone had dumped the too small stock magna grips for a pretty nice set of goncalo alves target stocks.
NYSP 28-2 on the top with the 520 below
The highly polished fixed sight frame of the 520 contrast with the matte finish adjustable sight frame 28-2

Very nice revolvers. I would say you got a great price on the 28, being a law enforcement weapon. I would have done as you and bought it.

That is not that common. I missed out on a similar one here months back, hesitated and it was GONE!
Nice find and a rare pair with interesting history.

Nice. One of the least practical purchases I would consider is if someone had my old 520 for sale.

As a retired NYS Trooper my only comment is that I hate you twice.
Just kidding, but if you add a NYSP marked 681 I don't want to hear about it.

Nice pair of Smiths!!! I am glad that you had a second pic with the 520, I can't stand on my head that long!
I have a 6" 28, no dash from 1960. (super clean S serial#) To date, it is my favorite. Enjoy your fine guns. Bob

Nice catch. I've been looking for one of those for a while. I love a 4inch N frame for shooting, especially one with the RR & WI sights.
Thanks for showing those.

Nice guns. Is the front sight on the 520 an insert or painted? I've seen other pics here with a yellow and red insert. Mine has a plain front sight. I am trying to find out if the inserts are factory.

The insert on my 520 is cream white and appears factory. I've seen photos of yellow inserts, but no red.

Congrats on two fine revolvers. Once you start, it becomes addicting. I have 12 NYSP/NYST guns in my collection and still looking for more, no duplicates!
