What color lipstick do you put on yours?

I am ordering dies, brass and bullets today. Yet another caliber to keep track of Other than the SW 500 I think that's all of them.

The .41 magnum was the first cartridge I ever loaded for also. Sitting at the kitchen table with a little Lee Loader and some 2400 powder. I was young and freshly married.
I had bought a Ruger Blackhawk a few years earlier (1968) and wanted to reload for it.
My BIL was a Deputy and carried a nickled 4" Model 58 in a Jordan holster. He took me behind his house several times and we gave that gun a workout. I always have loved the .41 magnum.
Sadly I have never owned a S&W .41, I have a Blackhawk, Redhawk and Contender barrel and have taken a good many whitetail deer with that caliber and it has always performed great.
Marriage, raising kids and then the opportunity to retire early has always wedged itself between me and the 58 I always wanted.
It is still on my bucket lists but my how the prices have soared.

I traded for this beat up nickel 58 at the Richmond SWCA meeting from our forum owner Lee. I sent it back to S&W and had them renickel it. Now it is too pretty to shoot.

For me the M58 shines as a carry gun in the woods. The sights are rugged, and the round poweful enough for almost anything.

Most of my handguns get one load and I stay with it so adjustable sights are not necessary in a lot of my use.

In its day, even the "Police Load" with the lead 210 grain bullet at somewhere about 850 fps (I have heard it actually chronoed faster) was too much for a number of cops, and size in the human does not equate to an ability to handle recoil.

A good number of police departments went to the .41 but they quickly dropped it. Adjustable sights were the rage in the sporting industry so the fixed sight guns (any fixed sight gun) lanquished. Ten or so years ago M58's were quite cheap and usually in very good shape.

Rule3, you will like that gun. My son is the only person I have ever run across that doesn't care for it, mostly because it looks lik a S&W #10...he doesn't like those either. I do not recall dropping him on his head as a child, but my wife did once.

In my search for brass I was looking at Cabellas. They have the HSM Bear loads, box of 50. It ain't cheap but and if you spend $99 free shipping.

Ammo to go is less but have to add the shipping cost

Ammunition To Go : 50rds - 41 Mag DRS 220gr. Lead Round Nose Ammo [DRS41MAG220LRN] - $28.95

Cabela's: HSM Bear Load Handgun Ammunition

It was because of this particular forum that I went on a model 58 hunting spree! I found one at a local gun show for $650, it had a problem with "push off" but I had my local gunsmith fix it and give it an electroless nickel finish.
I have several post on here about "The Fightin 58" and at the local range it's known as "The Beast" as it tends to silence the hi-cap 9mm/.40 crowd!
I've stocked up on Win. Silvertips for it and in winter it's my go to piece. It has all but replaced my 10mm...and that's saying something! Dale

Default Is there a 41 Special and why don't people reload?

It seems to me that Model 57/58's would be more popular if they had an alternative loading available such as 357 and 44 mag do. I have seen some loadings for a "non-magnum" 41 caliber load that pushes the bullet along around 875 fps. Are these just reduced 41 mag loads or does someone make a shorter "41 special" case? The guns are beautiful and S&W makes a Model 57 Mountain Gun that is quite tempting, lock and all. I shoot a fixed sight case-colored Model 22-4 that is very accurate and handsome in its own rugged way.

Time constraints are the only reason I could see not to reload for an expensive and hard-ro-find caliber such as 41 mag. A set of dies can be had for as little as $30 and a used single stage press can be picked up on the auction site for $50 or less. As an active shooter I would not own this caliber unless I could reload the ammo.

...yes, the lead 210 grain/950 fps load is the original Police Load except that the original police load badly leaded the bore within a cylinder full as the bullet was so soft. Todays reduced power loads are made with hard cast vs. swaged bullets and don't hardly lead at all.

Georgia Arms has good prices on .41 Magnum...

Georgia Arms - Search

Appalachian Ammo also has great prices but their website is offline for some reason. They were just at the Concord, NH Gun Show last month...

Website.com

Their phone number is: (207) 860-2688

I have wanted a 58 for many years since I have a fondness for fixed site S&Ws... I found one about a month ago and finally had a chance to load up some 210 lead swc's over some unique...

All I can say is i have a new favorite... POI matches POA.... and it is one of the best shooting guns I have had the pleasure to own.... great mix of power with very manageable recoil....

I had owned a 57, 8 3/8 years ago and only shot hunting loads (i.e. hot loads) in it and I never really cared for the recoil..... just a little too much to go plink with... but with the "police load" it is a whole different ballgame... and one I am glad I gave a chance to again.

jdickson397;
Yes, there is such a cartridge as the .41 Special. Seems to me it has even been loaded commercially, but it escapes my memory who made them. I'm pretty sure Starline offers the brass, and of course, any .410 -.411 bullet is useful. Data is available online.

I love my old factory nickel M58....despite being .41 mag. I like mine for the reasons others have mentioned. Namely, its an N-frame, fixed sights, PC magnas and a Tyler T feel great, it balances well and mine has a fantastic DA pull. I really like its narrow hammer spur too.

I like the gun, not the caliber. If it was a .44 special or mag It would be my favorite revolver. Someday I'll have one made up.

.41 mag doesn't do anything that the .44's don't do better IMHO.

I'd shoot that pistol enough that she would have to marry me, for fear of being called a woman of the night.
