Finally found my "Dirty Harry" Model 29
Well, I've been searching the gun shops and gun shows for 2+ years now, looking for a blued Model 29-2 with a 6-1/2" bbl. I already own some very nice N-frames, including 4" and 6" 29-2s, but the 6-1/2" has been eluding me (the few that I've found were either in so-so condition or had ridiculous asking prices or both!). As luck would have it, I finally found one at a Central Florida gun show a couple of weeks ago, N75xxx (~1972). It was a beauty, smooth as silk, and almost no turn line. I'm sure that not many rounds have gone done the pipe. No box or goodies, and the seller was asking $900. After a little Sunday morning haggling, I plopped down the cash...happy that I was taking home my prize for what I considered was a fair price ($775). I haven't had the chance to take my "Dirty Harry" to the range yet, but I'm looking forward to going this week...it should "make my day". Sorry, I couldn't resist.
I would eventually like to buy a matching box for this revolver...what style box would an early 70's Model 29 come in? Could it have been in a wooden presentation box? Thanks.

Nice 29-2
for the box I have "upped" my thread today
29-2 Presentation Case Cardboard Box
I have a 1969 29-2, so the box should be the same as the one I bought
Also there is Doc44's beatiful thread that explains all
http://smith-wessonforum.com/blogs/d...1957-1985.html
EDIT: For the manual I would look for one with the writing "PRICES EFFECTIVE JULY 1971" on Page 3 with revision 2-70 on diagram page 2. I think this is the closest manual to your gun. Good Luck!

If you get tired of it, please let me know. I'm needing a 29-2 for my twenty-something dash two collection.

You need to get you a mold and load up some of these 260 grain jobbies-very accurate and a big, wide meplat to boot.

Harry Callahan- I didn't see your thread...thanks!
Sorry "Harry Callahan", I should have looked at your thread before asking what box I need for my 6-1/2" (ca 1972). It does explain that I should be looking for a wooden presentation kit and goodies. Thanks.

but to be more precise you should have looked at Doc44 thread :-) LOL only kidding
Doc44 's thread is much more helpful than mine!
you can post here WANTED to Buy
that way if anyone has the case and paperwork they can help you out

Way to go, very nice.. You know those Dirty Harry guns like to shoot light Specials,in that size gun it will have less recoil and more control than a 357 magnum with wad-cutters. LOL!

His gun will NOT use the clamshell type as you have. His will be Styrofoam bottom/foam top. Joe C refers to as Type B and was used 1969-1975.

The box would be like this one. Unfortunately, given the asking prices on nice boxes these days, your deal may not turn out to be so good after buying one.

I think there is a misunderstanding. His gun should be 1973 and before I posted I double check it, so the correct case is not the one you have posted because it has the "lip" on the top part
he needs the Type B like KJM has posted and for that reason it should be like mine, the "half clam"

Nice find! Mine is from late 1968 and the action is smooth as silk. One of the smoothest triggers I have ever used.

Since the 'S' went out in 1969, his was probably a N. But you'd have to ask the people who have it for sure.

One of the actual Dirty Harry movie revolvers is on loan to the NRA museum in Fairfax Va. I've seen it several times and it is one of my favorite pistols there. It too has the ID card and badge displayed with the revolver.

Yes, there were, until 1979, according to SCSW. N serials began in 1969.

In 1969 N Prefix started after S333454
In 1979 the 6.5 was dropped to 6
So, from 1969 to 1969 there were many 6.5 44's

That's a mold from Accurate Molds-number 43-260B...Here's a sketch of it found on Tom's website. It's not Old West however just a flat nose 260 gr bullet that's the most accurate I have loaded with 10.5 gr of HS-6.

Sweeeet revolver HawgRider. I don't suppose the seller saw that " I gotta have this " in your eye and you hid it pretty well to get away with your dream gun for that price. Don't you feel guilty. NOT. Good for you.
