Default A question on barrel lengths...

I have various revolvers with barrel lengths from 2"-6". The 2" actually measures 1 7/8". The only barrel that is right on is the 4" barreled revolvers. The others come up a fraction short.

Did Colt round off the numbers for ease of description? I sometimes see lengths listed with the fractions. Thought it might be a model change of some sort.

Thanks for not laughing too hard.

I don't think an eighth of an inch variation is at all uncommon. I have had S&W revolvers with a nominal barrel length of 4" but the actual barrel measurement is 3-7/8 inches.

Most all S&W barrels are short by 1/8". They start out as the designated length, but after crowning and final finish, they lose an 1/8".

There have been barrels recorded with true to length barrels and even a few that were over by an 1/8, and also a few that were short by 1/4".

I agree that they are sometimes a quarter inch short.

I think all of mine are short by at least 1/8 of an inch so that's the nature of the beast or at least S&W.
