29-2 What do you guys think? (Update with pics)
Friday I was in my LGS picking up a 36-1 shooter I had picked up cheap on gunbroker, and I noticed a 6 inch 29-2 in the case. It looks good, definetly a shooter with some holster wear, but everything feels tight and it's wearing target stocks. No box or papers but it does come with the holster that gave it the wear. They want $650 out the door. My wife gave me the thumbs up and I rarely see 29s around here for this kind of price. What do you guys think, good deal? Serial # is S250xxx, maybe 1965 ish.

It should be a 6 1/2 inch and a nicely made piece. Price sounds decent if the gun is any decent shape. Bob!

for an S serial numbered gun i think that is a good price. period correct target stocks should have the diamond-center.

Based on your description I would buy it, especially with the S serial number.
In that serial range it should also have diamond targets, known as "cokes" on it. If it wears this type of grip it is a definate buy.

Yes, by all means - if it had the proper stocks and it was in reasonable shape, I would have had a tough time passing it up.

I'm not sure about the stocks or barrel length. I honestly didn't think I'd get permission from management to buy it so I only took a brief look. They're holding it for me until I can swing by later this week. Even if they aren't the correct stocks I'm pretty sure I'm in love with it already. I'll be sure to post pics if she comes home with me.

It's a bargain if it has Cokes. You'll find out that the 6 1/2" 29 balances very nicely and is a pleasure to shoot!

Even without the proper stocks, the gun is still worth considering, IMO. 29s from that era were very nice guns. You could have Keith Brown make a set of his reproduction stocks and have yourself a very nice 29 with better-than-factory wood. Something to consider...

So I negotiated for $10 off, and she followed me home (Every little bit helps right?). I'm pretty sure they're coke grips, but they aren't numbered. They have some wear, most notably at the rear where the checkering is worn almost smooth to the border. Also has the widest trigger I've ever seen. I took a few quick pics. It's a little dirty and greasy but let me know if you think I did well.

You did good. I would have a hard time leaving that one there, too.

It's nice to be the one with a lucky find on here for once. Usually I get on here and drool over everyone else's finds. Now to wait patiently until I get out to the range eventually....

Clean it up as best you can and you should have a pretty nice old gun. Be careful with the stocks. It is easy to chip the coke stocks when you remove them. They are a bit thin in the area of the bottom of the backstrap. The gun does not look like it has been used a lot, but check it out for endshake and timing. 44s need to be kept properly tuned.
I think you came away from this dealing "smelling like a rose."

The action is tight and there is almost no play in the cylinder when it's in full lock up. The gap looks good, just gotta get a gauge in there. The cokes are already removed and stored properly. I have a set of hogue rubbers on it until I find some nice replacement wood.

What? Why deny yourself the pleasure of using this gun with its original stocks? You should at least give them a try.
If this gun is just going to be used at the range, there is no reason not to leave them on the gun and get some good out of them.

That's an excellent price in my opinion, I would have bought it for sure.
Just a thought, try shooting it with the cokes on it. It is a totally different feel from the later targets.

Don't you worry, she's getting a nice piece of her favorite rustic furniture out of the deal.
And I may not be able to take them with me, but I want to leave a few for the kids. I had to build my collection from scratch but I'm hoping to start my kids off right.

Great find
Wow, what a great find, even with a little honest holster wear. Those CBGs are worth $300-400 by themselves anywhere in the world. You did really well...why did you even give it a 2nd thought?

I had to think twice because of the number of guns I've already bought this year and my wife does the budgeting. After 2 kids and 8 Smiths and counting, I think she's a keeper.

I agree with those that say she should be wearing her original shoes. They've certainly not suffered from being on the gun all those years. THAT is a beautiful gun and deserves to wear the "correct" original grips. If it were mine, they'd stay!

If you haven't already, wait until you start buying quality leather to outfit those two kids with. It's nearly as expensive as the guns!
Ask me how I know

Maybe someone can school me on this one. I have owned two 29-2 revolvers, and after I get through a couple hundred rounds, the ejector rod begins to loosen up. This makes the gun lock up and you have to tap the cylinder to open it. Then manually tighten the ejector rod in. That is why I am looking for something in the 29-4 range. I believe S&W corrected this on later models. Can someone tell me if I am off the mark? Forgive my ignorance as I am new to the forum.

Foxcdr, your extractor rod (and extractor) needs removed, cleaned, and a drop of blue Loctite. The change from RH to LH threads on the extractor rod, if that is what you are thinking about, happened before your 29-2 was made. It will have LH threads, but that is not an absolute fix. The Loctite, if properly applied, will be.

Wow, great find! Seems like you did pretty well on that one...
If you ever, you know, get sick of it, I'd be glad to take it off your hands for that price

I agree with others that suggest shooting it with the cokes. Nothing feels as good as cokes....at least to me....on the 29. You did fantastic on the deal.
Congrats! You're gonna love it!
