I can't stop buying cheap wheelguns...
The last three firearms I've purchased have been cheap, slightly finish challenged and cleaned up nice. I can't help myself- I feel like it's leaving money on the table if I don't take them with me. 1957 Model 18: $350, Ruger speed six: $200, and just yesterday a mid to late 60's Model 36 for $250.
Here's the 36:
Next on the list is a 34 and 28 (will be harder to find cheap)

I do the same when I can find them. They usually clean up nicely and make great range or carry guns.

$800.00 for that group, what a rip off
Tell you what I am going to do, I will bail you out of the two S&W for what you paid ($600.00) less a impulse control penalty, say $100.00.That's only $50.00 per gun.
Of course I will pay the shipping.
I normally would not make such a kind offer but seeing your new to the forum I want you to feel welcome.
Remember for the future, just because their cheap doesn't mean you have to buy them. It's much better to tell me so I can buy them.
Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.

With your kind of luck , I'd start buying lottery tickets. IMHO it would be a shame to leave such pieces for those that don't know or appreciate such works. S&W revolvers are very hard to find at any LGS's in my area, except of course for the abused and mistreated. Congratulations.

Thanks for the support penmon- they're all mine, mine I tell you!
GJH come on down to CT, the weather is crummy but there's plenty of S&W's to go around!

notarex,
No shame in buying cheap wheel guns. I picked up two Model 15's on Saturday for a total cash investment of $150.00. Do I need two Model 15's? No, but I have them and someone else doesn't Do I feel bad? No.

The problem I keep running into at the local gun shows is that people think their cheap guns are worth gold. I would have paid what you paid for those pieces in an instant. Good buys.

I surely could not have passed on either of those at those prices. Not many bargains in my area. Congrats on your run of good luck.

I have a similiar affliction, I buy down on their luck Smiths and say to myself they would be a great car gun, then I clean them up both inside and out, apply a little Blue Wonder, and before you know I say this is much too nice for a car gun and start looking for another "car gun".

Cheap guns: An oxymoron in my area. As said in another post, nearby gun shop won't do layaway. Pawn shop's cheapest handgun is a new Heritage .22 Rough Rider with 2 cylinders at $199 but from what I hear it's junk, made of pot metal. Most of the Smiths and Colts well above $400 in my neck.

I need to start hanging out with you. Your info does not say where you live.
In my area I would have never stumbled into those prices. If I had, I also would have added all of them to my collection.

Howdy: I too, love to find a deal in used wheelguns, though it is becoming harder to do ! The last REAL deal I got locally was during a sale a large range and sales showroom put on in cooperation with the local PD, selling off guns recovered but unclaimed ( guessing the past owners got insurance for them, or were just unavailable and/or forfeited their rights to same. ANYWAY there was this 3" round butt Model 10 with sorry rubber grips- offered $275 on it and was given that much consideration. Got it home, cleaned the solidified grease out of the lockwork and found my new favorite .38! Other recent purchase was a 4" GP100 stainless, because L frames are so high in ANY condition and this ( other brand) was under $500. Amazing to me what is thought of as inexpensive nowadays.

I buy older Smith's thinking I won't be upset if someone breaks into the house and steals the "night stand" gun. Like you though, I clean them up and think, I would be very upset if someone stole this fine revolver and again the search is on for another. Will it ever end? Probably not...

36 FBI?
Great buys you got there.
The 36 looks to have a 2.5" barrel.
That was originally a special order for the FBI and the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police).
Any markings?

There was a model 10 with a 2.5" barrel that was FBI and (I think) Michigan State Police issue, but not a model 36.
Nice trio from the OP, the secret is out...

Screaming deals on those, Notarex! Nice.
Perhaps you live near a LGS that can't appreciate guns that aren't made of plastic?

Expertise is what makes money. My relator knows houses, the banker knows bonds, the broker knows stocks.
I know S&Ws and occasionally find a good investment opportunity that is MUCH more interesting and fun than most other investments.
Of course, gun collecting is a poor investment stategy overall (buy for $250 and sell for $500 12 years later...not a Fortune 500 plan), but it IS an area of expertise and so doggone much fun.

Nice thread. Great deals.. I read with great interest about dream guns on this forum. Then there are small dreams that come true with nice affordable examples like the ones you picked up. Enjoy shooting them

I can't stop buying cheap wheelguns...
I opened this thread thinking I was going to see Rossi, Taurus, Llama, Star, etc.
Nice finds indeed. There seems to quite a few model 18s showing up lately. I need to find one soon.

AAAAHHHHH I'm not alone. Good Deals seem to pop up all at onetime for sure. If we don't grab them they be long gone for sure. But i'm hooked on the older S&W revolvers plus the new S&W N frames too. A while back i purchased 5 handguns in two weeks. Four of them were 22cal. I got a perfect 100% H&R 923 thats in chrome the seller called it nickel. Two were S&W's.

Darn, this thread makes me sad. Here in the People's Republik hardly any LGS carries "used" guns because of the infamous "Safe Guns List." It makes it easier for them to sell new stuff to their patrons. And we never see "cheap, neglected" guns for sale.

Beautiful Smiths at great prices! Here in southern CA, I can't seem to find a model 36 for under $400. One local pawn shop wanted over $600 for a beat up model 28-2! $750 for a model 18 in rather poor condition. It goes on and on.

If the problems are only cosmetic....
Why not? As long as they work well. I'd like to find a few deals like that to expand my collection for carry guns and the like.
