Talking My first Pre 80 S&W (Police M36)

Hey all!

I am a new member to the site as well as a proud owner of a new (to me), Model 36 No Dash Police release.

Needless to say I am super excited to have this as a part of my collection and eager to share pictures of my new baby!

She is pretty ragged and war torn, but I love it none the less.

As you can see from the pics the grips are pretty well beaten, and the nickel plating is thin/discolored/gone in places. Marked SPPD, which I think is St Petersburg FL. If someone could give me an aprox age/date on this I'd sure appreciate it!
I can't wait to get it out and shoot it!!!

Luke

As you can see, she is DIRTY and well used...

Hopefully I didn't get robbed too badly for what I paid...

Either way, I really like it.

Maybe there is hope to refinish it and make it look pretty again, if not I still love it none the less.

Nothing wrong with that gun. Maybe it's worse than it looks in the pics, but I wouldn't refinish it-- just add a grip adapter or a set of boot grips and carry or shoot it happily ever after. FWIW about the only boot grip options for a sq butt j-frame are Badgers or Spegels.

The consensus here will probably be to not refinish it. You will wind up with more in it than if you just bought a really nice one. I love to get those old finish challenged guns. They make excellent carry guns because you don't worry about dinging them . . . they are already dinged. Your doesn't look all that bad in the pictures. Clean it up. Carry it. Shoot it a lot. I always figure the money spent refinishing a piece like that would be better spent on ammo.

Try using Mothers Mag Wheel Polish, it's great for making old nickle guns look like they're almost new.
