29-2 value question, for possible purchase
I've got a WTB ad up here, and on a local forum, and a guy is offering up a 29-2 w/ a 6" barrel. Previous owner had some grips on it that allowed some serious rust/moisture damage, doesn't look like there's any bad pitting, but the it's still pretty bad where the grips used to cover. My question, what should I offer? I would prefer a 45ACP, but this is probably going to end up a project gun regardless of caliber. He hasn't stated a price, either. Here's some pics:

If it were me, I'd start at $350 and see what happens. The finish is destroyed , but it is a pinned barrel and possible recessed cylinder? I wouldn't go higher than $400 because a refinish is going to cost upwards of $300 then add grips to the equation. So right there you're talking $800 into it at least, but it will be one beautiful gun for $800.

If the price is right and the gun is mechanically sound, looks like a good candidate for a Metalife job . . . the refinish will cost a couple of hundred there so you'd have to get a good price on the gun. I wouldn't put more than $300 -$350 at the most in personally. Refinished in IHC it would be nice enough, but still just a shooter.

Ford's refinishing can give you a beautiful looking gun for around $300 like this:
I assume the above poster was suggesting hard-chroming, but I disagree, bluing would be the better choice for a 6" revolver.

Since the revolver needs refinishing badly and a re-barrel to get to where you want in 45 ACP I would offer a very low price explaining my plans for the gun. If he wouldn't come down I'd look for an abused 25-2 and at least start with the right caliber and cylinder.

If you really want a .45 ACP revolver, why not just buy a model 625 or an older model 25. As other have mentioned. Start at $300, bow out above $350.
