Serial number is on the butt, you may have to take the grips off to see it. Model number is found when you open the cylinder. Look at the crane and see if a number is stamped the. For example MOD 10. Your revolver may be old enough that there is no model number. Model numbers did not start until 1957 0r 1958.

Welcome to the Forum.
Serial numbers on most Smith & Wesson revolvers is located on the gun butt. A few S&Ws have the SN on the front strap.
If three is a letter prefix, such as "V", "C", "D", "K", "S", etc, it is part of the serial number. The cartridge should be on the side of the barrel.

Assuming you have a .38 M&P handejector it would be about 1922/23.
This one shipped 9/24. It's s/n is 453776.

Just curious but who do you need to "register" this revolver WITH? Are you in one of the states that require registration of handguns, or are you in a foreign country?

Probably 1975. The SCS&W lists D659902 - D750000 as being produced in 1974-75.
