64-3 Came Home with me Today (pics added)
Cleaning it up now and its looking pretty good. It is a 4" heavy barrel serial#1D874xx. If anyone can date it for me I'd like to know? Will post photos and hopefully a range report tomorrow.

Pinned barrel but no recessed cylinder. Thanks for the date.

A model 64 in .38 Special would not be recessed, that was a magnum (and rimfire) feature.
Magnum centerfire revolvers had recessed chambers until about '82, when pinned barrels were also phased out.

Added a couple of photos....sorry about the not so attractive Pachmayr grips, but they are better than the ones that came on it. I was able to take it out to the range yesterday and put a few cylinders through it. Typically nice S&W trigger pull and the weight of the barrel made shooting very pleasant. My old eyes had a little trouble picking up the stainless sights, but very happy overall and glad to have a m64. Now to find one of those tapered barrel models.

I used to have a two inch 64 from the same year as yours. I remember it fondly.

I had the same problem seeing the sights on my M64. I bought this sight paint.

It really helps a lot. I got it mainly for daylight use, but it does glow for quite a long time. I am going to put it on my wife's Walther PPQ stock 3 dot sights. I would recommend it highly. Worth the $10.00.

Rockman,
Very nice gun. Mine is a 1D5 s/n born in 1979. That gun is one of my favorites.
