Thinking about a Model 10
Guys,
So I'm making a list of guns I'd eventually like to get. I looked at the Model 10, did some reading and I'm thinking it might make a nice member to my collection.
So of all the different varieties which Model 10 is the most wanted? I really like the look of this gun, I enjoy shooting .38 special rounds, it just looks like a fun little gun to have.
Thanks for your time
Ryan Z.

They are fun to shoot, cheap to feed and make fine training tools for new shooters. After the first one you may find yourself looking for a second one.

Heck, you could build an entire collection around Model 10 variants. My favorite is my 10-5.

This is my 1952 Pre-Model 10. Not the prettiest or the most valuable gun I own, but one of my favorites. Accurate and easy for me to shoot well. Lots of fun at the range. Easy to stick in a pocket.
I just acquired a nice 10-5 snub for a family member. Not perfect cosmetically, but excellent mechanically They love it. I'm always on the lookout for these gems. Everyone should have at least one Model 10 snubnose.

Don't let these guys snow you.....Model 10s are rare, difficult to find, expensive and it's difficult to find ammo for one.....
Seriously, I'll make the claim that Mdl 10 is one of those handguns that is so perfectly designed that it just feels right to almost everyone. And, of course, the 38 Spl. is the perfect cartridge for that perfect revolver. Everyone should have at least one.
Uh, oh....I might be embarrassing myself with my enthusiasm. Probably why I have so many of them.....

I was in your shoes not long ago - after checking around and handling a few at the lgs I ended up buying a 10-1 4" heavy barrel off this forum. I absolutely love the gun - it just feels right.

I think I like the Model 10 best with the 5 inch tapered barrel, but the 4 inch tapered barrel is also nice.

The M&P/Model 10 is the gun that made S&W.
Definitely get one.
Any one.
Then get more.
Many more.

If you open up your selection list to include the pre-model 10's you have another 50+ years worth of fine revolvery to choose from (of course, you may limit your +P ammo options). My 94 year-old M&P shoots as well as my 10-5.

The model 10 is the gateway model. It has been down hill ever sense i first tried one. I then went to 15s 17s and 18s. I got so hooked I started trying 19s. I couldn't get enough. Still can't. Now only 27s 28s 29s work for me. My addiction hopeless. This is what a mod 10 will start

I've always been an auto guy. I own several autos, and love shooting them. I carry an auto, and am unlikely to change my carry weapon. A couple of months ago a LGS started getting in some model 10s that came from a security company that was upgrading their weapons. The price was right and a 4" 10-5 followed me home. I did a few cosmetics to it. It is a very accurate weapon and I love shooting it at the range. As a plus .38 spl is great for reloading.

My dad has a 4" model 10 that he has had for many, many years...he has very rarely shot it. If he goes before I do, I will treasure it as an heirloom because it was his.

Guys,
Thanks for all the great input. I'm thinking of a 10-5, or newer. My wife has a Model 15-2 and a Model 63 which are great shooters. So I'm thinking a Model 10 would be a nice addition to "the family".
Y'all have a great weekend.

M&P M10's are an American icon, sorta like M1911's. Can't imagine not having one, or two, or more.

I don't have a model 10(yet), but do own the ss version of it, the model 64. Excellent shooter, great bedside gun and is my preferred HD gun as 38spl going off inside would be a bit more tolerable than 357mag/44mag.
As for the statements of it is "cheap to shoot", I agree wholeheartedly..if you reload. Otherwise, when ammo is available, I wouldn't call 35+cents a piece cheap to shoot.

I have a 64 and plan on getting a 10 this year. The 64 has quickly become my favorite revolver. Well it and my M57 Mountain Gun. I have almost no desire to shoot autos anymore.

That's funny - I think about Model 10s all the time!
The underrated little revolver might just take the title as the most useful self-defense revolver ever.
It is sized right for its cartridge, it fits almost everyone, custom grips for better fit are all over the place, the K frame is a great action, it "looks" like a revolver should, it is comfortable to shoot, it can fire wadcutters with almost no recoil and +P loads suitable for self-defense.
Is it the best tool for self-defense? No. That title probably goes to the 1911 in .45 ACP. It is thinner than any suitable revolver, takes up about the same space and weight, yet because it is flat, it conceals easier, fires a cartridge that has surprisingly low chamber pressure, surprising low recoil, and yet it is significantly better as a stopper than almost anything else you can carry around. Like the Model 10, the 1911 can be fitted with all sorts of extras, but that isn't necessary - it is fine as it comes from the modern makers, especially Colt. Plus, the 1911 feels better in the hand than almost any other pistol except perhaps the Browning/FN GP35 (High Power) or the SIG 210.
The Model 10 is most useful in 4 inch, but the 3 inch round butt, if you can find one, is just about perfect for self-defense.
The current Classic Model 10 has the best of all worlds - 4 inch AND round butt for better concealment.
Other K frames are good too, and many would argue for adjustable sights. Back in the day, the FBI fired its qualification course including a stage at 60 yards. Agents did fine with their Model 10s. The FBI has always issued a "duty" sized weapon for concealed carry, so the Model 10 has been proven in that regard also.
I think one of my friends said it best when he said that he regards his gun safe as a permanent home for every "Model 10 and 1911" he can find that does not have an adequate home. I think he is on to something there. If only the budget would allow. . . .
Oh, by the way, if you want to really fall in love with the Model 10, check out this video on "The Fundamentals of Double-Action Revolver Shooting. The shooting method is no longer "state of the art," but the Model 10 shown is still a great tool for the job!

Here's my new favorite, a pre-10. Its 1951, I think. Not bad with wadcutters, either.

Well, I was looking at a LNIB 10, diamond grips for $795. Expensive, I know, but the siren sounds.... somebody snaked me. So I settled for a very nice model 67, and saved some cash. At least I can shoot it and not worry about messing up a collector gun.

I just picked up a beat up old Model 10 police trade I. From buds. It's a 10-10 4" Heavy Barrel. It's not the prettiest gun, but man is it a shooter. This is a keeper, and as others have said, near perfect in size too. If you want more of a collector, look for an earlier P&R model, if you just want a shooter, any M10 will fill that position quite well.

Agree everyone should have a model 10.
I actually prefer the ones with "history".

If you can, check out the 3" heavy barrel, round butt. To me, they have the perrfect balance. Keep in mind the Model 13, everything the Model 10 is, with .357 power.

Just think about how long the k frame has been in production (under different names). And how many follow-on products have sprung from that frame design (M-19s, M-65s, etc. etc.). This has to be the most successful handgun ever designed.
My only k frame currently is an M-66 but I think about its lineage when I take it to the range.
