Take it out and shoot it. You bought a good shooter, and the grips are immaterial unless they don't fit your hand. In that case, replace the grips with some that fit your hand then refer to my first advice. JMHO, YMMV!

You could sell the stocks to me.
OK, I'll trade you a set of diamond magnas so you will have the "correct" stocks.

The gun alone was worth that price. You just got a free set of rosewood stocks that fit the gun like they were molded to it!!!

What a sweet deal. Beautiful classic N-frame .357, with equally beautiful dark rosewood target stocks. Doesn't get much better than that. Very fair price for that gun!

Another vote for having a great revolver with great grips, stocks, handles, the thingys you hang onto when you press the trigger.
There will be those who stress it is not period correct. If this is important to you, not a big deal. The correct grips are out there.
Personally, it is not a big deal to me.
Every firearm I own is for shooting and whatever helps me shoot it better is a good thing. Then again, I am an accumulator, not a collector.
If you cannot have fun with it, why did you buy it? Let the warrior roar and revel in the fun.

The stocks are period correct. They are typical to special order 27s and 29s.

Great revolver with a superb set of stocks! Who gives a whoot if the stocks are not original to the gun, they are far better than the factory magna style stocks for 90% of the shooters in the world. Enjoy your purchase!

Many such guns left the dealer with those stocks just in a separate package.

My feelings wouldn't be hurt by those grips.
They look comfortable.

Before you get too disappointed in those smooth targets you might consider that the gun could have been special ordered with just those stocks in place. If you have to replace them with Magnas, at least hang on to them in case they're original.

It's quite possible that these are the stocks that came with the gun. I purchased a new model 19 from Smith and had ordered the larger target stocks on the new gun but it came through with all target options (hammer & trigger) EXCEPT the grips. I told the dealer ' send it back' it's not what I ordered. BUT The dealer had already registered the gun to my permit number before I picked it up. The gun was returned to Smith and the same came back from Smith with target grips but the larger grips now covered most the S&W logo.I was a bit annoyed and called Smith. I was basically told 'get over it'...So ya never know...Good luck with that one . It looks like a good shooter and that is why you bought it...right ? Not as a collector...Have fun with it.

I did not want to take the time to look it up, but apparently many others did. So I believe them that S&W may have shipped the gun with those stocks on it (one of the very few factory options offered on an M28).
Or the dealer may have swapped stocks for a new gun purchaser who asked him to. Back in the day they were something like a $5 option!
So enjoy it to the max! I personally love smooth football targets, so if you just can't stand them ... What am I, third or fourth in line?

Gentlemen,
these grips did not come with this gun. The gun is a late S Prefix, S332xxx which should date to 1968-69. These grips are earlier than that

I'm not taking sides, but you can't put an exact date on the Rosewood stocks and without a letter you don't know what your gun shipped with.
I'll bet there was a lot of Fancy grips sitting on the Surplus/Sale shelves at the Factory in 1968-9

Mike, you could be right about them being surplus but their style does predate the gun though as there was a new style of stock in place in the very late 60's to early 70's. Stocks of this era should not have the flush screw escutcheons like these stocks do, unless they were leftovers and then they were likely ordered as an accessory.
