I have inherited two S&W .38 Specials from my father-in-law. I know a little history about them but I want to know more. If anyone can tell me how old they are I would be most appreciative.
The second gun has a G with a 7 in a circle on the yoke where the model number would be. I am going to assume that this is the Model#. I know that the second gun is older than the first. I am kind of new to this so again any information is greatly appreciated. I'm trying to get some pictures on here but my files are to big. Sorry!
The first one is:
--S&W .38 Special CTG.
--Hand Ejector
--Serial #K488***
--4" Barrel
--Adj. Post War Sights
--Model #15-2
The second one is:
--S&W .38 Special CTG.
--Hand Ejector
--Serial #C 418***
--4" Barrel
--Fixed Sights
--Model # G circle 7

Your first gun is a .38 Combat Masterpiece, made after Model numbers were assigned in 1957. The second gun is a Military and Police .38 made after 1948 and before Model numbers were assigned in 1957. Others can pin the dates down closer, but that is the best I can do from memory.
Pre model 10 = 1957-58 and was not model stamped because it was already in production before the order was issued to stamp it with the new Model #10. The 7 and G are inspector marks.
Thanks guys for the information that you gave me on these guns. My father-in-law passed away recently and that confirms the information that he had told me about these guns several years ago. One of them was given to his daddy from a Texas State Trooper, and the other one he bought. Wasn't sure which was which, now I know. Any idea what kind of value they might have?
